Charlotte NC Historic South End - Located just 1.5 miles from Uptown Charlotte, bordering the historic Dilworth community, South End had its beginning in the 1850s when the first railroad line came through Charlotte. The rail connected the Queen City to Columbia and Charleston, SC. Over the years, a thriving manufacturing community sprang up along the tracks, centered on the then burgeoning, formerly thriving Charlotte textile industry.
South End experienced a revival in the 1990's as restaurants, shops, architectural and design-related industries discovered the uniqueness, the beauty and the versatility of the old mills and expansive warehouses. Many of these warehouses have now been converted into cool, modern upscale condominiums. The addition of Charlotte's light rail system has, in recent years, sprouted new development along the tracks as well, providing easy access to nearby Center City Charlotte. South End has become an increasingly popular spot for shops, restaurants and urban living and is home to beautiful new condos with some of the best views of the Uptown area, in the city.
