The threat of a landslide has caused transportation officials to close a 12-mile section of the Blue Ridge Parkway south of Asheville.
The Federal Highway Administration said heavy rainfall in the area recently led engineers to close the roadway in the area near Mount Pisgah. Additional rain is in the forecast, and engineers said that added to their concerns.
They are worried that a slope in the area will crumble, as it did in 2002.
The closure is from mile post 393.6, at the French Broad River junction, to mile post 405.5, near the Pisgah Campground Country Store.
Officials said they do not know how long the road will remain closed.
