Mitch Edmondson and Scott Glasscox are used to building residential and commercial structures.
Now, they are creating warm, homemade donuts covered in sugary glazes and sweet toppings. At their business, Family Dough Donuts, customers can create their own unique donut, from a standard honey glaze to blueberry glaze with cinnamon sugar and chocolate chips. One customer comes in the Denver store monthly and purchases donuts for her brother stationed in Iraq.
Customers, especially children, enjoy watching the donuts being fried in vegetable oil and come off a conveyor belt, even if it may take a few minutes. After the donuts come off the belt, they are made to the customer's specifications. Edmondson and Glasscox can make 72-dozen donuts every hour. Each step in the donut-making process generally takes about 15 seconds.
"You might have to wait five minutes, but we got them to where you we can give you a dozen in a minute-and-a-half," Glasscox said. "People love the freshness. They love the idea."
The friends still dabble in the construction business, but the work has been slow as the real estate market has taken a plunge. Edmondson and Glasscox needed to find another way to make income. They toyed around with landscaping, building apartment complexes, becoming landlords and getting back into the professional racing industry. But none of those ideas quite appealed to them.
A friend suggested Edmondson and Glasscox open a donut shop since Lincoln County did not have one. Edmondson and Glasscox spent three days traveling, all the way to Delaware, to research donut shops. They wanted to create a donut that would be reminiscent of something found in New York or Boston.
"We ate so many donuts that I didn't want to eat a donut until we came back and started this place," Edmondson said.
In February, the friends opened their donut shop, but had not yet perfected the recipe. The batter that dropped in the oil would sink to the bottom and never float to the top. The glazes ended up looking like a thick pie topping. Edmondson and Glasscox spent many nights and weekends working on the recipe.
One month later, Edmondson and Glasscox got the recipe just right, they said. "Once we got close, we invited all the friends we knew and made donuts," Edmondson said. "We wanted a better donut than Krispy Kreme. We have a lot of people tell us that our donuts are good compared to everybody else."
Many of Edmondson and Glasscox's friends helped create the specialty donuts, such as, the Lake Norman donut with honey glaze and cinnamon sugar, and French Toast donut a maple glaze with cinnamon sugar.
Children tend to flock toward the confetti donut with a honey glaze and sprinkles. Edmondson hopes to introduce an apple donut this fall.
"I thoroughly enjoy doing this," Edmondson said. "I like what I do. I hope to have a whole chain of them all over the world one day."
