Henry is a native North Carolinian who grew up in Rocky Mount, NC. His mom, Helen, was a school teacher. When school let out for the summer she took Henry and his two brothers to their cottage on the banks of the Pamlico River outside of Belhaven. Their cottage was on a high knoll looking across the river from what is known today as Indian Island. Henry and his brothers would play along the river and find indian pottery, arrow heads and mounds of oyster shells far from the water. As he did his research for the book Henry found that a tribe known as Secotan lived along the Carolina coast and that their exact location was unknown. Henry used his literary license to locate Secotan in the area he knew growing up. As the book transitions into modern day this same area is the location where Uncle Jason and Sarah have their cottage, Bella Vista.
