After all the hoopla surrounding the first major wind farm on the Outer Banks off the coast of Buxton and Frisco in the Pamlico Sound, Duke Energy has decided to pull out. The project was seen as way to harness the enormous amount of wind energy from the Outer Banks to help power Hatteras Island. The project was also going to provide a springboard to larger wind farms that could power several counties in Eastern North Carolina.
The project was only a few months of away from getting started when Duke Energy decided that the Pamlico Sound was just to shallow for the barges need to transport the equipment out the build site. Duke Energy did learn from their studies that the real potential for off shore wind farms is off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean. Duke is hopeful to get plans for that project going in the next year or so. Maybe one day the entire state of North Carolina will be powered by the wind that constantly blows off the Outer Banks. How great would be not to have an eletric bill!
