Lake Hickory is a recreational lake, allowing boating, jet skis, water skiing, swimming, tubing, and other water activities.
Lake Hickory was created in 1927 with the completion of the Oxford Dam. The dam parallels the NC Highway 16 bridge, over the Catawba River between 1-40 and Taylorsville. It is 122 feet high, with an overall length of 1,200 feet. The Lake has 105 miles of shoreline, totaling over 4200 acres of surface area.
The attractive shoreline of Lake Hickory is one of its greatest assets. Duke Energy, the owner of the lake, has kept over 20 miles of shoreline for natural areas. The rest of the shoreline consists of homes ranging in size from 1,500 to 5,000 square feet.
