Searching for real estate in Matthews North Carolina? You may be very confused about the results you get from the various real estate websites. Is the property in Mecklenburg County or is it in Union County? Is the tax location the Town of Matthews, the Town of Stallings, the Town of Weddington or perhaps, no town at all? Here are some tips to understanding where a Matthews property is really located.

1. The Town of Matthews lies entirely within Mecklenburg County. No part of incorporated Matthews crosses into adjoining Union County.
2. The Matthews post office delivers mail to a large area including some homes located in Charlotte, Matthews, Mint Hill, Stallings, Weddington and other areas of Union County. How do you tell which county the property is in? The Matthews post office has two zip codes. 28105 is for homes in Mecklenburg County and 28104 is for homes in Union County.
3. How do you tell which "Matthews NC" town a property is in? If the property is in zip code 28105, go to the the Meckenburg County GIS and find the tax card. It will give you the local jurisdictions that receive taxes from the property. If in 28104, go to the Union County GIS and look for the same information.

Does it matter whether you are in Stallings or Matthews or unincorporated Union County? Yes, it does matter because each of the counties and each of the towns offers different services and has different taxes. Drilling down into the information may help you know exactly where you will be living and how much you will pay for government services when you find your next home.
