Household Waste Collection Day Coming Up for New Hanover Residents

There is a good reason to Start cleaning out your garages and sheds! The annual New Hanover County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, is coming up in a few weeks. Collection will take place in the old cinema parking lot, across South College Road from UNC Wilmington. Residents only business waste is prohibited. Collection day is November 3 from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.

The following items WILL be accepted:

  • Auto batteries
  • Cell phones
  • Cleaners
  • Electronics (TVs and computers only)
  • Florescent tubes
  • Fuels
  • Ink jet cartridges
  • Mercury
  • Motor oil & antifreeze
  • Paint and paint thinners
  • Pesticides/herbicides
  • Rechargable household batteries
  • Solvents
  • Tires (no rims please)

The following items WILL NOT be accepted:

  • Ammunition
  • Asbestos
  • Furniture
  • Smoke detectors
  • Electronics other than TVs and computers
  • Medications
  • Propane cylinders
  • Industrial materials
  • Trash

New Hanover County Landfill is open to receive material year-round, free of charge.

Car batteries, motor oils, antifreeze, appliances, tires and paint are accepted Monday through Friday from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm and Saturdays from 8:00 am until 11:45 am.

The landfill is located at 5210 US Highway 421 North. Computers may be taken, free of charge, to Coastal Enterprises, 1214 Kidder Street. Call 763-3424 for details concerning computer recycling.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is coordinated by the New Hanover County Department of Environmental Management, City of Wilmington, New Hanover Cooperative Extension, UNC-Wilmington, NCDA & CS Pesticide Disposal Assistance Program and Keep America Beautiful of New Hanover County.
