Attention: Onslow County Parents-- New Immunization Requirements for Students

This is an important message for all North Carolina parents of school age and college NC School Immunization Requirements students.

Beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, new immunization requirements will be enforced. The news media has done a good job of spreading the message in North Carolina.

But, if you are relocating to Camp LeJeune Marine Base, New River Air Station or Naval Hospital at Camp LeJeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina; you may not be aware of the new requirements.

Or perhaps you are buying a new home in Hubert, Swansboro, Richlands, Maysville or Jacksonville North Carolina...... the word may not have reached you.

The rule change goes into effect beginning with the 2008-2009 school year which begins in August 2008.

A booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) vaccine and a second dose of mumps vaccine.

The new rule states that a booster dose of Tdap vaccine is required for the following individuals:

  • All students attending public school who are entering the 6th grade on or after August 1, 2008, if five years or more have passed since the last dose of tetanus/diphtheria toxoid.
  • All students not attending public schools (i.e., private, home-school, non-traditional schools) who are 12 years of age on or after August 1, 2008, if five years or more have passed since the last dose of tetanus/diphtheria toxoid.
  • Individuals enrolling in college or university for the first time on or after July 1, 2008, if a tetanus/diphtheria toxoid or tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccine has not been administered within the past 10 years.

Regarding the change for the mumps vaccination.

Students are now required to receive a second dose of mumps vaccine before enrolling in school, college or university for the first time. However, any child entering school prior to July 1, 2008 is not required to receive a second dose of mumps vaccine. Children were previously required to have only one dose of mumps vaccine. Most children already receive two doses of the MMR vaccine (measles-mumps-rubella) by age four. Therefore, this rule will primarily affect children who received single dose of the vaccines.

Since these vaccinations are required, students will be able to receive the booster dose of Tdap and the second dose of mumps free. Parents should set up an appointment with their child’s doctor or local health department to receive the immunization prior to the beginning of school. . The vaccine will be free-- however, the doctor may charge a fee.

For more information about the immunization rule change, visit www.immunizenc.com or contact your doctor or the local health department, or the Immunization Branch at 919-707-5550.

Hi Cynthia,

Along with your blog looking colorful, easy to read, and informative, it sure must be a help to those new military families moving in.  Much Success!!

Dick Beals

Cynthia, I'm sure this information will help those that are new to the area or looking to move there.  And it's great information as I'm sure there are many families.

Cynthia, I have heard that as a country we had started getting lax on our immunizations so this sounds like good news for North Carolina.

Cynthia - Good information, but I must admit the just thinking about a needles can give me the chills.

Ouch!  Great, comprehensive information... which I am sure is why you are The Home Specialist!

Hi Kathy,
I agree, shots are not fun but immunization sure is important.

Hello Carole,
That is who I am targeting those coming to the area who might not know about this new law.  Thanks.

Marchel,
I've heard that too and I think that is scary!  There are some terrible diseases out there that we have the ability to protect our children from and that's what we must do.

Hi Jennifer F.
Seems several members share your senitments.  LOL.

Susie,
I know, I can almost feel the "sting".  Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I'm wondering how may kids are now trying to hide this post. :-)

Cynthia, great information. It's funny 'cause I don't have to even think about this stuff anymore. ;-)  Are you getting your clipart from Iclipart.com? ;-)

Pepper

Hi Cynthia, this is a great community update just in time before school becomes a mad rush to get last minute activities ready.

Diane,
Thanks, I do try to provide information I feel will be beneficial to those in my area.

Chuck,
I hadn't thought about that but could be.  LOL!

Hi Teri,
We deal with different issues at different stages of our lives, don't we?  I do sometimes use Iclipart but this particular one came from ClipArt Heaven.  Thanks.

Hello Gary,
My guess is many kids will show up without having the shots and parents will have to scurry around to get them immunized as required.

Yours is much more creative!

What kind of program are you using?

Regards Homer

Hello Homer,
Thank you but I'd say they are just different.  I'll email you.
