Hurricane Season Along NC Coast

As Tropical Storm Hanna exits Carteret County with her strong Tropical Storm winds ( up to 74 mph) and gusty rain bands...I am once again reminded how powerful nature can be and how it it necessary to plan ahead using the Hurrican Preparedness Kit I posted about last season. Along with wind and rain squawls we are warned of tornado threats. Yesterday water spouts/ funnels were reported in Carteret County. Today erosion is expected along the beaches as high tide comes in around 1:30 pm. Random power outages are being addressed as well as downed trees and minor damages . All in all, we've dodged "what could have been" .

The last two days Coldwell Banker First Realtors made sure signs and exterior items that could become airborn and dangerous were secured on these homes/ lots. Later this afternoon we will drive out and check on vacant listings so we can call the sellers with a report.

( I consider this part of my job as their Realtor. )

my post about : Hurricane Preparedness Kits

Directly behind Ms. Hanna are more intense situations with Hurricane Ike in the Tropics (already creating a mandatory evacuation in the Fla. Keys for 9-10-08) and behind that ....more storms.

To track these storms/ Hurricanes you can print out one of these NOAA Hurricane Tracking Maps. (located at bottom of home page- printable version) These maps have been around for years and while my kids were younger I used them to teach them how storms travelled and how patterns were formed. It also was a good geography lesson.

So, as the Eastern Seaboard is bracing for additional activity this Hurricane Season, please remember to use caution with any standing water on roadways. Water surges and flooding are known to be the deadliest part of the event as people venture out to drive and "look around" Standing water as low as 2" can rise a car off the road and water current can quickly sweep you into ditches and harms way. Do not drive unless you know your route is safe to navigate.

Finally, be safe and be smart...your life is more important than any material posession !
