Last evening was "graduation" for this year's Moore County Leadership Institute participants. The event was celebrated with cocktails and a dinner at the Donald Ross Grill at the Pinehurst Resort Clubhouse, and featured Walter Sturdivant, President and General Manager of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro radio station WCHL. Mr. Sturdivant spoke on the subject of leadership and shared some stories of his days of playing football for the Tarheels with Lawrence Taylor and others who went on to careers in pro football.
Mr. Sturdivant also paid touching tribute to his mother, who was in attendence, for both her leadership skills and ability to pass on the importance of leadership to her children. She was widowed unexpectedly, left with 4 small children, and living far below the poverty level. Today those four are all college graduates.
I attended the event to support one of my colleagues, Shannon Stites, a participant in the program. And here she is after receiving her 'diploma.' We are expecting great stuff from her now :)
