Rest in Peace Dear Friend.

He was 18 pounds of pure heart. His name was Casey and he was the best dog I ever had. My husband bought him for me when he was 8 weeks old and weighed a whopping 3 pounds. In no time at all it was clear that I was his favorite human, although Corey, our big old yellow mutt, was definitely his best friend. I'd never been around Jack Russell Terriers before, so his energy and inquisitiveness was an exhausting but thrilling surprise. That was 14 1/2 years ago.

In the past year it has become obvious that Casey was nearing the end of his life. He finally slowed down, but his love for his family never diminished. In late fall we were able to take him to church for the blessing of the animals. I know he was always blessed but that made it official and I'm so grateful for that experience and for a priest who loves animals as much as we do. Casey was surely a constant blessing to us. Two months ago his heart began to fail and he really didn't want to play anymore but I convinced myself he wasn't suffering.

In the evening all he wanted to do was lay in his bean bag in front of the fireplace.

Then he stoped eating and I knew I couldn't deny it any longer. A trip to the vet confirmed it. His heart, liver and kidneys were all failing and he wouldn't last much longer. I couldn't allow him to suffer any more. I made the appointment for the following day. (I had to have one more night with him.)

Casey Goetzinger - October 1994 - March 13, 2009

Yesterday Ted and I wrapped him in a blanket and carried him to his vet. Dr. Todd Worrell has been his doctor for the past 10 years and we all consider him part of our family. I held Casey. Dr. Todd, his tech, Ted and I all cried as Casey quietly went to sleep forever.

I'll miss you good buddy and I'll never forget the joy you brought to my life.

God turns clouds inside out to make fluffy beds for the dogs in Dog Heaven, and when they are tired from running and barking and eating ham-sandwich biscuits, the dogs find a cloud bed for sleeping. God watches over each one of them. And there are no bad dreams. -- Cynthia Rylant
