Out and About in West Jefferson and Ashe County

Getting cabin fever and looking for interesting things to do in Ashe County and West Jefferson over the winter months? There are some great upcoming events.

Feb 8 - Mt. Jefferson Park presentation - Animal Adaptations - how they adapt for the punishing winters on the mountain. 2 p.m. Meet at the Park Office. Indoors. 336-246-9653

Feb 10 - Sol y Canto, the Latin band, will perform at 7 p.m., but bring a dish and get there early for a potluck (beans and rice and the basics will be there) at 6:15 p.m. At Family Central in Jefferson. Call 846-2787 for more info. FREE.

Feb 12 - Opening for a retrospective exhibit of the paintings of the late Florence Thomas, 5-7 pm. Call 336-846-ARTS. Ashe Arts Council Gallery. Exhibit runs through March 20.

Feb 16 - Presidents Day Luther Rock Nature Winter Hike at Mt. Jefferson, 2 p.m. Meet at the Picnic Shelter. Cold weather hike - bring appropriate warm clothing and good shoes. Starting at 4000 feet above sea level. 336-246-9653

Feb 25 Mt. Jefferson Sunset & Twilight, 5:30 p.m. Meet at the 1st Overlook. Explore basic astronomy and mountain history. Rain or snow cancels the program. 336-246-9653
