Your Coastle is Cold even with a Roaring Fire!

Folks have always been fascinated by Castles, they offer ua a gothic allure. Being surrounded by myths and being told the Castle is haunted by ghosts. There are many Castles over in Europe, that are will known for being haunted by ghosts, witches, or one of them there vampires.
You just may be asking, what in the world does this have to do with, Selleing, Buying, or owning a home!
Will how did they heat them there Castles back then?
When folks are in the maket to buy a home, sometimes one of the main requirements for their dream home. Is that it has a fireplace.
Marketing folks, call a fireplace a seller, that is a fireplace sure will help sell a home.
But while most folks like the idea of snapping and cracking logs in the fireplace, on a cold winter's day, a fireplace is quite low-tech and in ways they are actually impractical to have in ones home.
Lets look back at them there Castle times. Fireplaces date all the way back to them. Folks back then thought that the only surefire way to get and be warm, was to have a fireplace in each and every room.

The folks back then just never could figure out, the rooms of their Castle. Were somehow always colder with a roaring fire going in the fireplace.
How can that be? Will you see a fire consumes a great amount of air to keep going. Where does all that air come from? It comes in through any and all cracks and seams, it comes in to the home from outside. So when your fireplace roars, the fire with in the fireplace, is actually pulling in a large amount of cold air to help feed its self. The cold air goes right to the fire, which heads it and then immediately sends it right up and out the chimney. You are being warmed by radiant heat when you are siting in front of the fireplace, but your home grows colder as air is sucked in from the outdoors.
I'd like to ask you. Just what do you think, can be done to help stop this from happing?

Dale - Back then that was their only source for heat and many used for cooking and heating water. We have a fireplace and enjoy it a few times each winter when it gets cold enough. Ceil just cleaned the ash from our fireplace and fusses everytime she has to do it. It is nice to sit in front of a nice fire on a cold winter night even though all of the above is true.
Howdy there Carl and Ceil

A fireplace back then, sure was used for more than just keep ya wram.
There sure is always a bit of dirty work, that goes along with haven a fireplace in your home. I also enjoy haven a fireplace, to sit in frount of. We don't have in this plase. But I have had one in other homes that I have owned. There are some ways to cut down and even stop cold air from being pulled in to ones home, from there fireplace.
Dale,
I guess they did not know enough about science to know that the fireplace was not a very efficient way to keep warm.
Looking on the positive side, it beats a camp fire any day
Howdy there Steven, and Janice

Janice - don't take my post wrong. I just think folks should know that even though haven a fireplace in their home. Is a real nice thing to have, that it does also bring in cold air into ones home.
I had heard that some time ago, but pho-phoed it. No wonder bearskin rugs are important in front of a fireplace.

Folks sure do like to have a bearskin rug near their fireplace sometimes. Folks just may want to think about haven a glass screen in front of their fireplace, sure don't want a spark to catch the rug onfire.
