Some days you work nights....or better yet some days you just shouldn't work at all.
I've had a pretty interesting week...first there was my encounter with the lovely biker chick and then my encounter with Mr. closing dates aren't important.
I think I should have known enough to pack it in for the rest of the week.
Today we awoke to freezing rain...the dreaded black ice...there are few things in life I fear more than the dreaded black ice! Not a problem as I figured I'd just stay home and enjoy the big game ...which in my household is a big event.
Then...I got a call from a client wanting to take a look at a house I discussed with him yesterday...the house was empty and in need of total rehab. I knew that I could just go show and leave a voice message letting the listing agent know, as I had spoken with her yesterday.
I told my client that I don't do black ice...and if he really wanted to see it he'd have to come pick me up at my house and drive us. He said okay and came and got me.
The roads were icy and he drove slow.
We arrived safely and walked about the outside very carefully due to the ice. This is a 200 year old home with 14 rooms and really should be torn down. Armed with flashlights we entered the home very carefully...there was no power, wood rot and un-level floors made for slow going.
The first floor was pretty bad but when we found the formal stairway leading to the second floor it was a sight to behold. You could just imagine how it must have looked in its glory days...just awesome. The second floor was very intriguing...the workmanship and attention to detail just incredible but all in major disrepair...long neglected and looking for love!
After going through several rooms on the second floor we followed a long hallway with wood floors to the back end of house, stepped up 3 good sized steps and entered another level of the home...two rooms and attic access. In the second room there was this funky round hole cut into the floor...right in the center of the room.
It was pretty dark up there...so I walked up to the hole and looked down and couldn't see anything at all. I said “I wonder what this hole is for?" at the same time my client walked up behind me and shinned his flashlight down the hole.
I'm embarrassed to tell you that when I saw what was looking up at me with it's eyes open...I freaked and let out a loud scream...my listing package flew out of my hands as I turned I pushed my client aside and ran hollering like a blubbering idiot out of the room...through the other room and you guessed it.....I forgot about the stairs so of course I fell down them whacked my head on the wall...still screaming now only harder as my body was as out of control as my mouth was!!!
I landed on my knees...my body sliding down the hall way... I could hear my lock box ricocheting off the wall and my client yelling..."It's dead...it's dead...it's dead" ...I'm on all fours and could feel the warm blood pouring down my leg! I'm trying hard not to cry and praying that I didn't break my ankle again!
My client...he's freaking out trying to help me up...I'm okay but my leg is bleeding but he can't see that as I have on long pants...thank god. Anyway I get up compose myself and tell him that I am breaking a cardinal rule in real estate but he would need to do the attic and the rest of the house without me as I’m done in the house and would wait for him outside...
The ride home was interesting and my client thank god he knows me well and likes me because I'm sure anyone
else would have thought I was a nut case. Did I tell you he was my ex brother in law...he tells everyone he kept me in the divorce because he likes me better than he does his brother!
Did I tell you what I fear more than black ice?? Mice...alive or dead it doesn't matter!
I should have just stayed home today!
My knee... it's okay it just looks like my thigh.

Monika!!! Oh, dear... Oh, dear.... I hope that you heal quickly. I am sorry to say that I almost cried... out of laughter! You have such a way of making me feel like I was right there with you ... watching you screaming and racing out of a room ... down the stairs and "into" the hall. I sincerely DO hope that you heal quickly.
What a story!
Monika, I am so happy we have a mild winter and no mice in the house.
Moni you poor thing I hope you are on an anti inflammatory every six hrs, this is your mother lol. I'm hoping also that you won't be upset if I didn't at least have a teeeeeny smile on my face? I mean, tg you weren't more seriously hurt (I thought for sure the hole in the floor was going to get bigger and that is how trouble ensued but, uh, nope lol)
I hope you are on the couch watching football and feet up lol
Carole....Feet up and ice on my swollen knee ...Football game on the tube and trying to decide if I should cancel my class tomorrow...lots of nasty ice here,
Mariana...I can't believe I couldn't compose myself!!! Talk about dumb!!! When I came home a showed Jay my bloody swollen knee and explained what happened... he freaked out ...at me saying how could I let a dead mouse scare me like that!!!
Jay...Better not have any mice here... they make me sick!
Moni...Which do I need to do here?
Sorry. I couldn't resist. Hope your knee gets better soon :)
TLW...I need the laugh!! If you could shoot the mouse that would be great! I feel like I am theblond joke right now <GG>
My knee is like 3x the normal size BUT the Patriots won the game so life is good!!!
MoniKa - Oh my!! I was holding my breath while reading the part of your fall.......It surely is YOUR week for strangeness this week - WOW!!
Glad you're 'okay', hope your knee swelling goes down over night so you can teach your class tomorrow. I think they're still unsure what kind of weather we'll really end up with here tomorrow.
Ann
Monika, What a day! Glad you are OK. TLW would never shoot your mouse. In fact we have a few that live out in garage and they are pets. Yep TLW feeds them! Ask her to post a picture of the 20 raccoons we used to have. We love critters.
I am so sorry to hear about your fall - I was in such suspense and so glad you didn't fall into the hole yourself. I am also sorry to say that imagining you screaming with your hands up in the air made me laugh. I've been there and know it's totally involuntary (I'm not bad with mice, but cannot see a roach) They freak me out like you would not believe. Hope your knee heals quickly.
My wife won't look at fixer uppers with me, because she not only reacts that way for rodents, she is afraid of large bugs and lizards also.
I hope your knee feels better, ice for the first 24 hours then heat. I would have done the same thing. Yuck!
So much sympathy.....
.....Damn, that was a funny story !!!!
(sorry)
Oh Monika, Monika, Monika! A little ice for the mice wounds might help....Hope your on the mend soon. What a visual! Good thing it was a relative. Great story though A+. Hope that helps put a band aid on your sore leg!
Darlin' (Broker Bryant)...
I don't have a problem shooting a.....DEAD...Mouse. LOL.
Yes I confess...I feed the mice...They're cute.
Their leader's name is...Get this...Willard. LOL.
He is really fat and has a tiny little head. When I go out to the garage he just hangs out and watches me.
Willard and I are good buddies. He knows I am the reason he is so healthy. SVW.
Ann..I ended canceling the class last night...just to be safe. Glad I did with all this ice on the roads.
Bryant...LOL I can picture TLW shooting them <ggg>. They just freak me out..I never expected seeing this one in the hole and I just reacted!!! What a foolish thing I did.
Ines...Spiders do me in as well...oh so gross!!!
Randy...I couldn't finish showing the house for fear of running into another one...
Laurie...I am glad you understand! My husband doesn't get it at all!
Rob...I'll admit I cracked up writing this post...I just couldn't believe how stupid I was!
Allison...Thanks for the A+...I've been icing the knee and it's looking better.
TLW...Willard OMG!! Oh how GROSS nothing cute about mice LOL!!!! I wouldn't be able to go into the garage alone ever. BTW I love your logo!!!
Thanks for reading guys and I'm glad you all got a chuckle...believe me I've been laughing along with you :)
Moni - great story. You had me all the way to the end. You know somebody here should start a collection of stories and publish them. I bet it would be quite a collection.
Monika -- Yikes! Thanks for sharing....
Oh my gosh Monika, that's a crazy story ha,ha. I hope you are okay, geez as I read on things got worse and worse! Never a dull moment in your life I'm sure! After I read your blog I thought, guess my day wasn't so bad after all! I understand your fear of the ice...our roads have been so icy here in Colorado with all of the snowstorms! Hope you heal up fast!
Monika......I hope you are feeling better...I am so sorry for your mouse incident.......
I hate heights, but had to climb ladders and walk up to 100 feet in the air on 2x4 studs for an air conditioning company......talk about daily fear.....
I hope your knee heals quick!!
=-D
I'm sorry that you got hurt (but the story was kinda funny), from a former RN, my advice is ice & cold first
(to stop swelling and bruises) then use heat to heal.
I've done the same thing only I fell UP the steps, trying to get away from a SNAKE in a basement (only to find out it was a SNAKE SKIN - no live snake in it! ) Have also run away from garden hoses in a yard (thinking they were snakes too).
I'm not afraid of mice. I think they are cute. But I understand your fear because my mother is petrified of them. She told me once that she wasn't really afraid of the mouse itself, just it's FEET! and the THOUGHT of it's little feet on or near her. She'd say it "makes my skin crawl."
Monika, I am glad you weren't seriously hurt, I would have reacted the same way. I am terrified of some basements, I will spend all my time make sure I am not going to encounter these creatures. Another thing I don't care who it is, I won't do ice, I once had a bad fall and that was the last time. So is he going to buy the property?
Dena...Thanks so much! Your right I've read so many great stories they would be quite a collection of publishings.
Thanks Colleen...I appreciate your comment!
Patricia...It is still icy here...Scary... I had my husband drive me to a class today...I didn't dare take myself way my luck has been. Thanks for reading.
Alexander...Thanks so much! My pride is still a bit bruised but my knee is getting better. Now that take courage...climbing that ladder 100 ft up! Yikes!
Debbie...LOL yeah I've had a good laugh over it too! Snakes...are pretty ugly! I'm with your mom...those little feet ...the whiskers...YUCK!!!
Jennifer...Nope he is not (: he told me the basement was real bad (I did not go down there) a river was running through it! Ice and mice...nasty!!! I feel hiking in the mountains and broke my ankle..needed a very dramatic mountain rescue and emergency surgery! My fear is breaking it again. Thanks so much for your comments.
Moni
Sounds like a bad day! I am glad you found some interesting historical features of the house. Do you often encourage people to tear down these major fixers? We are spending a lot of time and effort to preserve them, as the craftsmanship no longer exists out here in California. Hope you have better days. K
Kristina...This one has major foundation problems which would take some big money to fix. The house is falling in on it's self and the land it sits on is very very wet. Value at this point would be in the land only. Sad to see these beauties rot a way like this!
I have to give you Alot of credit! In any business so many people would try to "keep their cool" and act like it was no big deal, when in reality no matter how much you try to act like something Doesn't bother you, everyone can tell! What you did isn't just normal, but admiable in my eyes. I am sure your client not only got a kick out of you screaming over a rodent, but probably felt more like you weren't just trying to sell a house! I saw that you had known him before hand, but I really do bet he is 100x more likely to buy that house from you now then he ever was! =) I applaud you for showing your complete human side no matter the consequences, life is too short to horde things like that inside of you!
LOL...Thanks Joel! I admit I felt very much the fool for having reacted the way I did. It did however make for a good laugh. He e-mailed me a little while ago asking about another property...I told him I'd call and check on it...he cracked up laughing and told me to request no mice this time...I don't think he'll ever forget and I know I won't! Thanks so much for reading.
