Portsmouth New Hampshire has loads of pets all over the place, and it's a great town for walking dogs (and kids!) - sidewalks in most of the town, a pet-friendly downtown, lots of nice little parks. And we have a City of Portsmouth Dog Park, too. That wasn't easy to get going, but it's been in existence for a few years now at this point.
Good news about the Portsmouth Pooch Park - it's in the process of getting a nice new overhaul. A couple of weeks ago, a brand new fresh surface was put in. It's now a stone surface, and it's been properly graded. After years of use, all the grass that had been there has worn away due to such heavy use.
The ideal surface would have been grass, but with such heavy usage, grass would have been too hard to maintain. So an alternative surface was found, and it's made a world of difference to those who use the pet park. No more dust bowl effect, no more mud puddles on rainy days, and all of that means no more dirty muddy dogs!
Other improvements in the works to the Portsmouth Dog Park include new trees, a separate section for smaller dogs, a dog water fountain, a 'doggie-poop' bag dispenser, sheltered picnic tables, and an area for strollers for a waiting area for those pet owners with small children.
All of these improvements are expected to be finished around the middle to the end of July. And Portsmouth pet owners couldn't be happier about all these great improvements!
Where's the money coming from for Portsmouth's Pet Pooch Park improvements? Well, the initial $5,000 investment came from the City's Capital Improvement Plan. The remainder is being funded from private donations. The goal of $12,000 is still in the works, so if you'd like to contribute to making this small part of Portsmouth better, here's how to donate:

Hooray for Portsmouth!!! SO NICE to see a pet friendly town! It sounds like a very nice place, I hope the locals get a lot of use out of it.
Ann,
Please add this to my pets are people too group..it would be an honor to have your blog there!
Ann~
When I come to visit up that way with my wee Papillon and my Giant Golden, I will know right where to head. Thanks for this information...and the photos!
I don't have any pets anymore....unless Jay counts :)
So the rocks aren't to hot or uncomfortable to their little paws?
Hi Sarah - yes, Portsmouth is an awesome place to live. I don't have a dog, but there are plenty of them around. Just about everywhere you look, you'll find all kinds of people and their dogs out walking. And now this park is geting a make-over - cool!
Ann
Hi Neal - I didn't even know there was such a group! Thanks for the invite to post there.
Ann
Hi janeAnne - "When you come up to visit"??? YeeHaa - when will that be??? That park will be looking really good before too long - perfect place for your pets!
Ann
Monika - hmmmm, I guess Jay could count as your "PET".....
Ann
LOL..he is kinda cute....
Hi Danny - I guess not. The really great thing about this stone is that there are no more mudholes and/or dust bowls in that park. I'm sure they did some kind of study to find out that this stone would be just fine for these precious Portsmouth pooches!
Ann
Ann, you write some of the best local info posts, very informative... and it's good that you link to other posts you've written. Someday, I hope to visit your area!
Hi Leanne - thank you so much for that lovely compliment! I do hope you get up here some day for a visit - it's a beautiful area and I know you'd enjoy your visit here. So much to do and see, and you just might fall in love with this area as so many have!!
Thanks again for such a nice comment!
Ann
Ann--There are going to be lots of happy puppies in Protsmouth! Great localism!
Ann, I don't know how I missed it before, but I just looked at your 'Fall in New Hampshire' tour (my favorite time of year in the northeast) and "wow!" - did you take all those awesome photos? BTW, I also love the layout & colors of your AngiesTours.com tours - also the "spotlight" effect is cool.
Ann, I didn't know Portsmouth had a dog park, wow! Great localism blog, as always.
This was awesome! Nice to see that your area is keeping on top of it's Pooch Park!
Teri - thanks for reading! Portsmouth is quite pet-friendly, so there are LOTS of happy pets and happy pet-owners here.
Sue - We've had this dog park for several years at this point. It's right next to the tennis courts and North Mill Pond in the downtown area.
Mariana - thanks for your feedback and for stopping by!!
Ann
Leanne - thank YOU!! I very much appreciate your comments on that tour. Fall here is just so beautiful, it's sometimes very hard to describe if someone hasn't already seen it for themselves. I took alot of those pictures myself, and other friends took some as well. I love having those tours - they just help convey so much about my area to those who check them out. Thank you for looking at them and leaving some feedback on it - very much appreciated!
Thanks for reading!!
Ann
Great information Ann. Did you know you can also post information about your local city pet parks and beaches on YOUR PET FRIENDLY COMMUNITY. I hope you visit us, to share with our Community everything that Portsmouth has to offer pet owners.
Thanks!
Molly
Hi Molly - no, I didn't know about that group on AR. Many thanks for stopping by and commenting. I'll check out that group.
