Portsmouth NH - Snow, Snow, and MORE SNOW!!!!

Front Bushes Covered in Snow - Heavy Snow - 1-14-2008 - Ann Cummings

Here we are again in Portsmouth New Hampshire, getting hit by ANOTHER snowstorm!

At this point, none of my clients who've relocated here this past year are believing what I told them when I first started working with them when they'd ask about how much snow we generally get here in the Seacoast each winter - and after the snow we've already had so far this winter, I can see why they're wondering!

Until yesterday, we had bare ground with just spotty patches of snow here and there, and of course the snow hills that had been piled up in parking lots around town. But nice bare ground, which was VERY nice to see!

Looking Out Front Door to Across the Street - Can Barely See - 1-14-2008 - Ann Cummings

REALLY - we really do get far less than this on average each winter! And just to prove that point, the snow budgets in the towns around me are pretty much spent, and we still have a couple more months to go in which we could get even more snow.

Our snow budget here in Portsmouth NH only has about 15% left of the total amount that was budgetted for the WHOLE winter, and that wasn't taking into account what will be spent on today's storm.

I had an email the other day from a client I sold a lovely home to in Stratham NH. She started off by teasingly commenting that she knew meteorologist was not part of the job of being a great REALTOR.........

Predicting snowfall is more art than science, and you can only go by what's happened historically. This is proving to be a less-than-normal winter in most of New Hampshire this year. Here in Portsmouth, we've already had about 3 feet of snow, today will add about another foot to that total, and who knows what the rest of the winter months of Jan, Feb., and March may bring us. We typically don't have that much in an entire winter's worth of snow!

The 1st picture above was around 7:30am this morning, and the 2nd picture was taken about noontime - piles of snow on top of my birdfeeders, and it's still snowing, just not as heavily as in the first pictures I took this morning. As of about 12:15pm, the news is showing that we have gotten about 10 inches of snow here, with some more still to fall before this storm moves off the coast.

Global warming???? I'm thinking that philosophy might need to be revisited just a bit........

I love the snow. It always raises interest in Big Bear Lake real estate after a big storm. We get tons of extra traffic and more sales. Plus, SoCal is always in a drought and we can use the moisture.

You are getting the snow..we're getting the COLD here in the Midwest!

Ann, Those are such pretty pictures. Can't say I miss it though....we walked on the beach for an hour yesterday..

Stay safe!

As my secretary said this morning, we wuz robbed!   Only about 2 inches of wet snow here.  We've had very little so far this winter.  I will live through you vicariously!

Now where did I put my snow shoes???

I know you're tired of it, but isn't it so beautiful?

Ann...  I don't know how much science goes into weather forecasting these days....  Think they've taken the approach called "Media Hype" so people will tune in an watch the show. Yesterday we were practically guaranteed 10-14" but the storm is over and there is still grass poking through the light ground cover.

Folks often ask how much snow we get in the DC/MD/VA area.  I tell them anywhere from 4-40 inches on average a year.  Which just says that, for our area, it's completely unpredictable.

I'd be happy if I never saw another flake.

Hi Ann,

Your pics are soo pretty! We have a slushy wet snow here, no good photos here! :(

Ann- Beautiful photos! I love those photos of the snow, it looks so pure, before it turns to mush! Katerina

Ann, We have had a bit, but anything is better than last year!  We are in a warm up right now.  I am sure it will snow again by the end of the week.

It's still snowing down here Ann. Jay and I are going to a Celtics game in Boston tonight so I hope it clears up soon.

Love your pictures :)

Israel - I love to look at the snow, and it usually doesn't bother me, but this year we've had far more than we normally do here in my areas along the coast.  Inland in NH, especially the mountains and ski areas, love to get as much snow as they can.  Down here on the coast, we kinda like just a sprinkling, not feet of it!  ;-)

Eirc - I think I'd rather have the snow instead of your cold.  That means it's warmer here, because it can get too cold to snow.  I'd rather be warmer......

Ginger - It's pretty to look at from inside, but I want to come walk on your beach!!!!

Linda - Carnac can't predict snowfalls??  I'd really rather have just the 2 inches you got than what we've got here, and it's still snowing.

I hope it stops snowing soon!!!  It's 3:30pm here and the snow is still coming down, a little lighter than before, but still falling!

Ann

Linda S. - it really is very pretty, but oh so tiresome at this point.  Come on up - I'll find you some snow shoes!

Dan - I wish I could see my grass poking through, that would mean we only got a tiny amount instead of what's waiting for me to wade through to start shovelling and clearing off my car.  Ugh!!

Lenn - I love that 'average of 4-40 inches'!  After this winter, I may just change what I say from now on when asked that question in the future.  At this point, I'd love to not see another flake - but then I look out the window, and I see way too many!

Suzanne - You didn't get this same snow we did?  I have Channel 5 on, Boston channel, and they made it sound like most of Mass, except the tip of the Cape, was going to get at least 8-10 inches minimum.  Lucky you!

Thanks for the comments!
Ann

Katerina - it is so very pretty to see right now, and until it begins to melt a little, and then it looks really ugly because it turns grayish-brown.  Mush is right!

Steve - nice to see you!!!  It's been awhile - hope you're doing well!  I've seen on the news that your area is really enjoying some nice warmer weather.  We had about a week of nice warmer weather, and then we get hit with this reminder that it really is still winter and not spring as it was feeling.  Our poor plants are going to end up being faked out!

Thanks for all the comments!
Ann

Monika - The Weather Channel shows the whole bottom part of NH still getting hit with fairly heavy snow.  How much have you gotten so far?  The guy who plows my driveway was here a couple of hours ago, and the snow he didn't scrape away from directly in front of my car is up over my bumper.  I dread the thought of having to go out and shovel all this snow.  Bear did he sidewalk earlier, and had cleaned off my car then, too, but you certainly can't tell that either of those was done at this point.

Jay had said you were going to the game tonight - what time you heading down there?  Drive carefully and HAVE FUN!  I used to go to 6-8 games a year, years ago, and always enjoyed them.

Ann, here in Middletown, which is in the middle of Connecticut we only got about 5-6 inches but it was wet and real tough to shovel.  They are talking about another storm on Friday.

Ann - I still love snow days and this one was no exception. Nice pictures.

(01/14/08 06:43PM) — Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker

Ann-looks beautiful to me .......I can just imagine your newest clients....yep, that would be a hard one to explain.....no, it only snows a little here LOL....

Anyway, it looks beautiful....and soon enough you will have bare ground again.

George - I went out about 4:30pm to attempt to shovel my sidewalk and clean off my car.  It seems like we had about a foot of snow at that point.  It's stiil snowing, but very lightly.  The sidewalk where I had cleared is covered in white again, but I don't think it's much more than a dusting.  Our snow here today was the dry fluffy kind - easy to shovel but a little heavy because of how much was there.  I hope we don't get more snow this week!!

Judy - I love snow days, too.  Gives you a 'legitimate' day to stay home, but we've just had too much snow this year for me.  It is really so pretty to look at, though.

Kathy - It is beautiful to look at, and I stand at my back windows looking out into the backyard and the woods behind me, marveling at the beauty and peace of freshly fallen snow.  And yet, even through that beauty, I'm really just tired of it at this point.  Can't wait for that bare ground again!  ;-)

Thanks!
Ann

Ann: Great photos! I love Portsmouth and also Ogunquit Maine which is so close to you.  I am jealous! We live in the Mid Hudson Valley of New York but spend one week every spring in Ogunquit and often stop in Portsmouth on our way up.

Diana - next time you're on your way up to Ogunquit, please give a call - I'd love to meet up with you. Ogunquit is only about 15-20 minutes north of me.  Glad you enjoyed my pictures!

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Ann- Beautiful photos...still waiting for snow here...the weathermen blew it again ...said there would be 10 inches....all we got was a dusting : )

We've had two, both melted, snowing now.

OK, I'm done, I got calls all day, John McCain, Mitt Romney, etc............

I'm about to lose my mind. Just like you last week.

It's over tomorrow.

Good bye!!

Sandra - I would have been happy to shift today's storm down your way, if only I'd known.....  ;-)

Missy - ah, I feel for you!  Those calls bugged the heck out of me - no peace at all for weeks here.  But it's quite nice now.  And you'll get the same after tomorrow's over!

Ann

Ann, I don't blame you! you must be ready for a week in the tropics after you first month..no, not even a month yet of winter! Come on down!

I love looking at the snow through your camera from the comfort of my warm South Florida home LOL

What is a snow budget?  Can we have a hurricane budget and make sure not one more hits us?

Wow! I kind of miss that but not the shoveling part...but it is pretty to look at. Thank goodness for snow blowers.

Ann-I am freezing and it's 55 degrees outside...as pretty as it looks...that pretty white fluff can't fool me. I think if there is anything that I could say I hate it would be the cold.  I hope you are staying warm.

Hi Ginger - after this, I might just be visiting some travel sites....... ah, some warmth and sunshine.....

Hey Maggie - that was good for a chuckle!  A 'snow budget' is what the towns project it will cost them for snow removal for the coming year, based on historical numbers.  This year was the out-of-the-ordinary year for winter storms, at least here in Portsmouth.  A 'hurricane budget' - I wonder how on earth they'd do that?  Those cost millions and millions when they hit, don't they?

Hi Neal - I only shovel my walkway to the driveway and garage.  I have a guy who plows my driveway for me.  I can't imagine having to shovel that - nope!  How close are you to Clearwater or Cape Coral?

Hi Midori - 55 degrees would be a welcome respite right about now.  Come on up and see this pretty white stuff - I've got plenty of coats and jackets, scarves and gloves you could use while here......  I am trying to stay warm.  We've heading south towards the end of March for a week or so, wish that were coming up sooner!

Thanks for the comments about all your WARM places - I'm dreaming......

WOW, out hear in California, I guess we do not know much about the weather on the coast. We have been watching the TV weather reports its great to hear from someone first hand there. You are so lucky to live in a winter weathers land. Lance

Hi Lance - I'm glad you stopped by to check out my snow pics!  It is certainly a winter wonderland when we get the kind of snow we just got on Monday.  We've got more coming Friday as well.  It's beautiful to look out at, quite peaceful and still in fresh snow.  I'm here on the coast and we usually don't get anywhere near this amount of snow - pretty to look at, but bring on spring weather for me!!

Thanks for reading and commenting!
Ann

We just recently had another snowstorm.  It sure does make everything look pretty and clean.  For a day or two at least.

(01/16/08 09:01AM) — Meg Zoller Houston Fine Homes

Ann - I love to see snow.  Thank you for sharing the pictures.  I used to live in the north when I was much younger.  Now I live in Texas.  I don't miss LIVING in the snow and the shoveling of driveways and the color of the snow at the end of its life . . .but I do miss seeing the new fallen snow.  The snow makes it mystical . . .and there is a peace and quiet that cannot be explained, except for the possibility of the magic for the day.

Here is Houston . . .it is rain, rain, rain for the next few days.  It's a bit cold and gloomy.  Therefore, I think I'll dream of your snow, snow, snow.

Have a great week!

Hi Karen - yep, after a day or two, time for it all to be gone, or another dusting is needed to keep it pretty!

Hi Meg - I hope you enjoy your dreaming!  And I really like how you described the snow when it's not looking its best, "the color of the snow at the end of its life" - that's perfect!  I'm glad you enjoyed my pictures!

Thanks for your comments!

Ann-South????? Where????? Near my part of town???? if so....let me know!  Would love to meet you!  Will travel for that!  :)

When I was a kid...I swear we walked in the snow uphill for about 2 miles to school...I lived in PA at the time the best part was afterschool going down the hill...we used a tobaggon...now that is the way to travel.

Ann...

I have been watching this over the last few days. Y'all are having a good ole fashioned winter.

I remember when I was a child we used to jump out of the second story window and land in 10 feet of snow.

Please don't tell my Dad about that :)

TLW...ROAR!

Ann We always enjoyed the snow whenwe lived in Sherborn, MA and CT.  We had an inch today - why even bother - it will be slop by tomorrow

Midori - yep, Orlando area where I'm from, actually Clermont.  I'd love to meet you as well!

TLW - we must have gone so long without a good old-fashioned winter that we forgot what they were like!  Bring on the non-old fashioned winters!!!   ;-)

Karen - snow, every once in awhile, is enjoyable, but we seem to be caught up in a seemingly never-ending pattern of storms every few days.  We've got one coming in tonight into tomorrow morning, and then the strong possibility of another one on Sunday.  I'd rather have what you're having....  ;-)

Many thanks for the comments!
Ann

Ahhh Ann-I am so excited...that would be so much fun!  I am looking forward to it!

You got it, Midori, and I'll look forward to finally getting to meet you, too!!  We'll be down in Clermont the end of March into the very beginning of April.

i have a solution to the budgetary problems. everyone in town can purchase a second home in the ft myers/cape coral area, we have a great selection with low interest rates, then the city can pass an ordinance that the whole town must go south for the month of february, and then you don't have to plow.

no more problem.

simple!

Jay - you are quite the budgetary whiz!!  That sounds like a really cool solution, especially with all this snow. I would so welcome a warm Floida respite about now.  I didn't realize you were in the Cape Coral area.  We were down that way in October for a couple of days visiting friends.

Ann

Oh my gosh, and I thought it was cold down here!  The most snow I have ever  been around is...well, it melts as soon as it hits the ground.  :)  Don't know if I could hang with that much snow.  It's Gorgeous!!

Hi Stephanie - that's just the kind of snow I'd like about now - melts upon contact!  Usually, the snow we get comes in 2-3 inches at a time and then melts fairly quickly.  Being on the coast here usually keeps us from having the amounts of snow we've had this year.  It's pretty but I'm ready for it to be gone, and it almost is right now.  We've been having some warmer temps and a little bit of rain mixed in, all of which helps to melt those snow piles.  Yay!!

ANN - Living in the "far North" we enjoy four very distinct seasons and I would not miss winter for a moment

Kathy - I LOVE the four seasons, and would really miss that if I lived somewhere where there was only one season, or even 2.  Each of the four seasons brings so many special things.
