UNH Goes Green (My Alma Mater)

What a pleasant surprise to read that the University of New Hampshire is in the top 5% of energy-efficient college campuses nationwide. The "Winter UNH Magazine", pages 26-29, is a great eye-opener as to what is happening with the local college students here in Durham, NH. I'm proud of my alma mater!

The driving force behind their green projects is no longer having to choose between the economy and the environment.
Presently they are working on a project that would save the university $30-40 million dollars over the next 20 years in heat and electricity bills by piping methane gas from a giant landfill in Rochester, NH.

Students "powered down" during the 2005 holiday break by "switching off, swapping out, closing up andUNH wildcats logo unplugging". Dubbed the "Waste Watch Challenge", this voluntary student venture saved the college $20,000.

(For any of you other alumni, it was Hubbard Hall this year that won the challenge; reducing their energy consumption by 30%.)

"The long-term goal is to get the whole UNH community working together: thinking about saving money and saving the planet, thinking about their own lives and how they can make a difference. Their goal, in the end, is to build a sort of university Green Team--one that generates a new kind of "power to the people."

The University of NH is teaching our youth that if we each pitch in, everyone together CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!

UNH WILDCATS, LET’S GO GREEN!!
