I'm babysitting my 11 year old grandson tonight. Out of the blue he asks me to help him set up a Blog? He wants his own Blog!
He is only 11 and I really didn't know what to say.
I asked him if he knows what a Blog is. He said yes of course he did and asked didn't I know all about Blogs???
Have you been reading my Blogs I asked? Yes, I have, he told me. He particularly enjoyed the ski blog since it had his photo in it!
So here he is wanting to Blog... I'm not sure how to let him have the feel for a Blog while keeping him off the web. I suggested he write something and I'll post it on my blog...after all I'm always looking for guest bloggers. No thank you he said, he really wants his own blog.
He has had his own laptop for about a year now and truth be told he probably knows more about technology than I do. For Easter he got a real Microscope and uses it all the time.

So maybe one of these days Michael will write something on my blog or maybe on Jay's blog. Or maybe he'll start up some kids blog somewhere...I'd really not be surprised!

Hi Mikey, Grampy Jay thinks you should have your own blog, why not?
Your starting trouble Grampy Jay...now he'll really be after us to set him up with a blog.
Perhaps Real Estate "Other" ;}
Better than myspace.
Yeah...myspace is scary. Real estate other...now thats a thought!
Thanks Gary.
How cute is that?!?!?
Do a google search for kids and blogs and see what comes up - bet there's some really cool places he could have his own blog that would make more sense for him than 'real estate other' here on AR.
I must say it's awfully hard for me to think of you and Jay and Grampy and Grammy - not exactly MY image of either of you. ;-)
Ann
Blogs will probably be great for kids' writing skills! Take the spell checker away from them and demand perfection? Force them to use words from their vocab list like we have to try and use our tags??
Ann...I have to laugh when I call Jay... Grampy Jay! Then I remember I'm Grammy! I can't believe he is 11 years old! Great advice...I will google kids blogs and see what I find.
Sue...Take aways spell checker now that is mean LOL! I think it is a great idea! :)
My 11 year old was just talking to me about that too. Only he wants to do more video blogging than typing. Oh, and he wants a place to display his Pivot stick figure animations. (Cool free site, for Mikey: Here)
I think that a Blogger platform would be perfect for a kid.
Monika, that is a smart kid. Why give Grandma the POINTS, when he can get the POINTS for himself.....LOL
He could probably teach the rest of us a few techie things :)
Both of my kids have their own blog on My Space. They're 11 and 13 and can do more with HTML and formatting than I can imagine. Of course, I monitor it, but what a great outlet for kids to learn and experiment with new technology.
Mariana..Maybe we should get them together and they can create one. I'll check out the free site. Thanks for commenting.
George...Points LOL...I near cracked reading that! can you just see us fighting over points?? How funny.
Irina..Myspace has always scared me a little but I think if we and his parents monitor it...it could work for him. He is very smart and loves inventing things...I call him the little professor.
I have not let my 10 and 12 year old get a MYSPACE, it's not about them being monitored, it's the other kids - I do agree with Mariana about Blogger - you can play around with the privacy and publishing.
This is great Monika - I think you should encourage him....look how much our own writing has improved in a couple of months - imagine how great that could be for a kid.
Yes. They should, along with others, form a blog-group called Children and Grandchildren of Real Estate Bloggers. It could be a blogging support group ... :D
Ines...I agree we have all improved so much. The other kids and adults who might be lurking on Myspace with bad intentions is my fear.
Mariana...LOL we should start that group for them! Jr RE Blogging group???
Mariana...Mikey loves that site!!! Thank you so much for telling me about it. He is sitting here laughing at his movie...What a blast!
Monika, your grandson is adorable! Mariana's kid too. Great pictures. I think that Jr group right here sounds great! My 12 year old may even want to join. Both my kids had MySpace and I forced them to get rid of them. I do not like what goes on in there. Please let me know if you get that group going. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Jrs. can put out there. I'm sure we can learn a lot from them.
Monika...
I'm surprised you couldn't talk him into posting some comments on this Blog Post.
We did that with both our Grandchildren at Christmas time. They (Brandon 10-Brittany 9) had a poetry contest right through my Blog.
It was great for them and great for all the grown ups. The kids were so busy writing poems that Grammy didn't have to spend too much time away from Active Rain :)
See if you can talk him into saying hello to everyone here before he leaves. That would be cool.
TLW...ROAR!
hello this is michael thanks for the stick figuer program I love it.thanks for reeding this blog about me. I want to know how to post my stickfiyer moves . I still want my own bllog. byby
LOL...That comment is staying as he wrote it..miss spellings and all (guess he takes after me!)
Mariana...You have to let me know how he can post those movies.
Thanks Maggie...I know I can learn a lot from him!
TLW...I loved your suggestion and so did Mikey. He pulled himself away from that stick figure thing and wrote his 1st blog comment. Thanks so much.
Michael...Well Hello young man. I hope you do get your very own Blog. It really is a lot of FUN :-)
Monika...Now that will be a part of you and your Blog forever. When he turns 18 you can show him this. He'll love it. Thanks for letting him say Hi :-)
TLW...ROAR!
Michael - you know it's always about Internet safety, and I am sure your mom and grandma have talked to you about that, as soon as they set up your blog, let us know where it is so we can come visit. You may even make friends across the US...I think that's pretty cool.
Thanks Ines...I'll be sure to pass this onto Michael. He will be reading this at some point again I'm sure.
Thanks so much.
Very cute....priceless!
Thanks Neal. I appreciate the comment!
Monika... that is awesome. And I hate to say this, but I agree with Grampy. Yes, the web can spin it's own web per se on young kids.... but you can set parental controls on most things nowadays. Looking forward to his first blog. My vote goes to Mikey.
LOL Jeff...he keeps me on my toes! If Grampy can set one up for him somewhere...he'll be soon be blogging. Thanks for reading.
