There’s Cold Gold in Dem Der Hills ~ Flying Fish Brewing Company, Cherry Hill, NJ ~ Leander McClain Realtor
Some months ago, I did a map search for the Point of Woods development in Cherry Hill, NJ. When I looked at the map, I saw a box marking the Flying Fish Brewing Company. Boy did my eyes get wide. I have been drinking Flying Fish brews for a number of years. So I set out to find this brewery. I didn’t have the address, but how hard could it be to find a brewery? Little did I know. I drove up and down the streets every couple of months.
No brewery.
I went back to the map…… Brewery. What the heck is going on here? Last week, as I was leaving JDR Shoe Warehouse (another of Cherry Hills best kept secrets), I looked up and what was across the street? You guessed it.
The Flying Fish Brewing Company!!!!
The official address is Flying Fish Brewery 1940 Olney Avenue Cherry Hill, NJ 08003-2016 (856) 489-0061 The number on the building is 1940, the sign on the door says 100.
Anyway, the same sign stated that tours are given on Saturday between 1 -4 pm. Saturday afternoon, I was there at 1:30. As I walked in the door, I saw a desk and not much else in the first room. There was no receptionist, so I followed my nose and ears into the next room where I found the company store and a group of 20 excited tour goers. Before the tour we were treated to samples of several of the brewery’s finest ales. Since I had previously tasted the others, I stuck to the limited edition Exit 4 brew. After everyone had a full cup, we proceeded into the brewery with the head brew
master Casey Hughes.
Casey was like a proud dad showing pictures of his children. Casey dropped out of college to brew beer. His mother was initially less than happy with his decision, but 15+ years later he is a successful brew master. My impression of the brewery was that it was very clean. The stainless steel equipment gleamed. Even the floor was clean (except the spot where a fermenting tank over flowed the night before). And I have a sneaking suspicion that it would not be that way very long.
Casey explained how almost everything used in their process is recycled. From the yeast which is used to brew multiple batches of brew to the spent grains which are picked up by a local farmer several times a week. Even the banding which is used to hold the kegs on the pallets is made from recycled soda bottles. The Flying Fish Brewery does everything in its power to be a green operation. The brewery currently employs 5 full time employees and 1 part time employee.
After learning about the brewing process, we headed back to the company store. On the tour, you are only allowed to purchase two six-packs. I gladly purchased a six pack of the Exit 4 and a bottle of the new Exit 16. According to the website, Exit 16 is “brewed with wild rice. We also added organic brown and white rice, as well as pils and pale malts. Rice helps the beer ferment dry to better showcase the five different hops we added. Lots and lots of them. We then dry-hopped this Double IPA with even more–generous additions of Chinook and Citra hops to create a nose that hints at tangerine, mango, papaya and pine. This beer pairs extremely well with spicy foods and all kinds of seafood. And of course, it’s quite enjoyable all by itself.” I can’t wait to pop that one open. So if you are looking for something interesting to do on a Saturday afternoon, stop by the Flying Fish Brewery for a tour. Give me a ring, I might just meet you there :)
Have a great day
