Local Press Release: Fairfield's Lattimer Realty Real Estate Agent, Gina Chirico Walking to Defeat ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease)

ALS Association fighting against Lou Gehrig's DiseaseMany may remember my post....Three Letters that had absolutely NO meaning to me two years ago, somehow managed to change my life forever.....where I wrote my mom losing her two year battle to ALS a/k/a Lou Gehrig's disease.

It's been 8 months without her and I still struggle through everyday but I agreed to participate in The ALS Association's Seaside Board...Walk to Defeat ALS and am the Captain of "Team Peggy". On May 14, 2011 (9 months to the day since her funeral), I will walk to celebrate my mother's life, not mourn her death....

Here's a copy of the PRESS RELEASE which has been sent to local newspapers and online media...............

Fairfield's Lattimer Realty Real Estate Agent, Gina Chirico, will walk on Saturday, May 14, 2011 in The ALS Association's Seaside Board...Walk to Defeat ALS. ALS is the acronym for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Gina has recently accepted the challenge and created "Team Peggy" in Memory of Her Mom, Peggy Carola, who lost her two year battle to ALS in August of 2010.

Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this fatal disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. When diagnosed, ALS patients are told the same thing Lou Gehrig was told 70 years ago - ALS has no known cause, no treatment and no cure. Unfortunately, the beginning is the best part of the struggle with ALS it gets much worse. Relatively quickly - usually within two years - the patient becomes unable to speak, to move, to swallow. Finally, the patient becomes unable to breathe. Most patients die within two to five years. Yet, through it all, for the vast majority of patients, their minds remain unaffected. Essentially the ALS patient's mind is trapped inside a helpless body.

"Everyone is invited to participate in the walk or make a donation." The goal of "Team Peggy" is to raise funds to help the Association accelerate the discovery of the cause and cure of Lou Gehrig's Disease, and to provide programs and services that are so desperately needed by ALS patients and their families. Both walkers and donors directly impact the lives of those affected by ALS by providing the means to raise awareness and to offer the services needed to treat and defeat this disease.
