Keep your family and especially your children, safe this summer as they frolic in the backyard pool or at the beach or your nearby lakes. Junkets to the local shore destination or just a quick walk to the backyard pool can do wonders for rejuvenating the overly-scheduled, hot and bothered summer psyche!
BUT you must put safety first when enjoying that cooling dip in the drink! UNFORTUNATELY, drowning is one of the most prevalent causes of child deaths each year.
Following are tips to help keep little Johnny and Sally, and all of their friends, safe around water:
* The first, most commen sense practice you can employ is to NEVER leave your child unattended when around water. Like a moth to a flame, children are drawn to water. Very young children can drown in only an inch of water!
* Empty all pails, buckets and bathtubs completely after each use. Also do not leave them unattended.
* Teach your child to swim at a young age.
* Life vests, flotation devices or inflatable toys are NOT substitutes for direct supervision of children. Please do not rely on them - even if a child is able to swim.
* Be sure that an adult supervising the child knows how to swim, get emergency help and perform CPR.
* Keep rescue equipment, such as a life preserver or shepherd's hook and a working cell phone nearby.
* Blow-up, plastic pools should be drained after each use. Also, store them in an upright position after each use.
* Don't mix alcohol and the supervision of young people around water.
* Enclose backyard pools with a fence and an automatic-closing, self-locking gate. Remove any furniture or other apparatus that children may use to climb over the fence to gain access to the pool.
* At beaches and lakes, always swim in direct view of the lifeguard on duty.
