Today I spent the day in my son's 4th grade class at Wedgwood Elementary School in Washington Township, New Jersey. I volunteered my time to teach material provided by the Junior Avchievment Program in New jersey.
I must admit, a few weeks ago when I picked up my package I was a little, ok a LOT overwhelmed. I was going to be standing infront of 25 Fourth Grade students for over 4 hours! Presenting materials that I hadn't studied since I was in fourth grade.
So I studied hard the night before and prepared the materials for the 5 lessons! I had a great time.
This is a great program, if you ever get a chance to participate, you should! The materials were very well labeled, lesson plans laid out and easy to use.
Although the subject matter wasn't that exciting, we had a great time and the 4 hours went by fast. The children learned about the fundamentals of our Region, the resources available and the basic concept or running a business including profit and loss!
I was assisted by a high school student who was in the Honor Society of our local high school Washington Township High School. She assisted in delivering the lesson plans that had been laid out and offered support to the students. She jumped in with both feet.
After the class was over, I met for lunch with the other volunteers, who all raved about the high school students. They are very mature and well educated, have a definite idea of what they are doing and where they want to go.
Seems as though our youth will have a strong impact on our future, and with the looks of these students, a positive one too!
