If you are looking for a sun-filled area with magnificent views, Mesa del Sol, Albuquerque, New Mexico may be the place for you.
Mesa del Sol http://mesadelsolnm.com/index.aspx on the Albuquerque south mesa, just south of the Albuquerque airport in Bernalillo County, promises to be the largest master planned urban infill development in the entire United States. As the name implies, Mesa del Sol is atop a sun-filled mesa with spectacular views on all sides.
The site will be developed over a 25-year period as a public-private partnership of Forest City Covington, the state of New Mexico, and the University of New Mexico.
A city within a city, the 12,900-acre high mesa development will occur in phases, beginning with the employment sector, and when completed, will consist of:
Mesa del Sol will be a network of urban villages, housing, and open space linked by a commitment to sustainability and a sense of place. -Mark Lautman, Director of Economic Development, Mesa del Sol

The main roads are in place and bulldozers and earth movers are part of the scenery shaping the land to receive the future homes and commercial sites. Two of the large employers of the first stage of development, Advent Solar http://www.adventsolar.com/company/company_info.html, and Albuquerque Studios, http://www.abqstudios.com/news.aspx?ID=95 are already in place with their names prominently displayed on their buildings under construction.
Mesa del Sol is a beautiful spot with easy access to major highways and the airport. The developers are planning for residents to work where they play. If they are true to plan (and judging from the way they have started, they should be) when you are ready to move to Mesa del Sol, your recreation and your job will be waiting for you. It will be another opportunity to say that Albuquerque is a great place to call home.

Eloise, we could use a little bit of that sun right about now in Connecticut, think you can spare some.....LOL
I was just thinking about the intense Sky's all pics of New Mexico show. They go forever.
The project kind of sounds like a Green Project? Also sound like it's been planned better than most.
George,
We have had our share of strange weather this winter. I don't ever say bad, because we truly qre happy when we have any kind of precipitation, and we really don't mind it if the sun still shines, which, it almost always does. Having lived on the east coast, I understand, I think, your need. I am here in large part for the sunshine.
David,
I also like living here for being able to see forever. That's my way of putting it. From atop a mesa, that is precisely how it is.
You are right about the development being a green project. It is a development that is raising the bar on sustainability and lots of other good things in housing development in the state and perhaps the country. I toyed with putting it in the green project group, but am perhaps getting paranoid about stepping on toes. I didn't. There may be a way of adding it, now, but I am not sure how.
Eloise-
It is exciting to have all these big projects going on here around Albuquerque. With this, and The Petroglyphs project, and all the exciting stuff that's happening out in Rio Rancho, I think it's a good time over the next 10 years to be a realtor in the Albuquerque area.
Thanks for the post,
Tracy Venturi.

Hi Tracy,
I'snt it an exciting time to be in the Land of Enchantment. It is as if everyone is discovering our area at the same time, and we are fortunate to have some innovative and creative planners and developers. In addition, I believe that there is genuine interest in preserving quality of life and preserving all those wonderful elements of the region that attracted most of us in the first place.
