Green Cars Come to Albuquerque

On Thursday, March 20, the CEO of Tesla Motors, Martin Eberhard, addressed business owners in Albuquerque, New Mexico., describing the cars he plans to start manufacturing in New Mexico next year.

it is no secret that Tesla Motors was coming to town. I read about the plans for the new factory in the New Mexico Albuquerque Journal several weeks ago, and we can go online to read everything Mr. Eberhard told us Thursday, about the cars. http://autos.msn.com/as/minishow/article.aspx?contentID=4024172&s=Pebble2006

But it was interesting to hear him talking, in person, about the cars and their capability as he compared alternative types of fuel and the possibilities for their production and explained the significance of manufacturing attractive, efficient, low carbon emission electric cars - cars for fun, for people who like cars, for performance, and for image.

Tesla Corporation's plant will be next door to the recently built TempurPedic factory, now hiring workers, http://www.tempurpedic.com/TempurCMSVB/company/employment/nmjobs.htm.

The business of car manufacturing will follow closely the business of manufacturing jet airplanes, recently started by Eclipse Aviation, http://www.eclipseaviation.com/index.php?option=com_newsroom&task=viewpr&id=53&Itemid=52, and the state's developing film industry.

These ventures along with other, spell economic development and higher employment. If the economists are right, economic development and high employment rates are key ingredients to maintaining a vibrant real estate industry.

It will be a good life if we can keep our environment clean with green houses and green cars and still make a living.

That is great econonic news, I like the fact that their factory will be using an already existing space.  Green is really catching on.  This is so needed  car really pollutes the environment; so new ways to curb this is alway welcomed.

I've read recently that the production of some of the green cars batteries is actually doing more harm to the environment than the gas guzzlers. I don't know about Telsa though.

Never heard of Tesla cars, thanks for sharing. Why don't you get one and drive up and see Marianna, Sabine and me. I'll buy lunch!

Eloise, the US needs to take the lead in not only manufacturing cars that are less pollutant, but that also use alternative sources of energy.  But that will be a big battle with the oil companies.

George- Given the current state of affairs, high oil and gas prices, I think the oil companies are not in a position to battle. If they found a way to get prices to an acceptable level, perhaps they could try. In addition,  the growing awareness of the damage to the environment and the need to do something about it will make their battle much harder. Your point is well taken, however. I had not thought of it. Your comment also reminds me of the stories of how cars gained supremacy over the railway.

Dena- Why do I think you are teasing? I love the thought and I won't say no, so keep that lunch money handy. The first cars to drive out of Tesla's plant are expected to cost about $150,000 (apparently a great price). We do know that green houses are more expensive to build than the traditional, but in the long run are expected to make up in efficiency savings. I asked Martin Eberhard about maintenance. His response was that it would be much less than current cars. There iare no moving parts, no engine to wear out. Weird, eh? I have to get very busy to be ready to get one of those cars when they start manufacturing. I have a luncheon date.

Danny- Martin Eberhard addressed the question about the disposal of the batteries. As I recall, he said a very large proportion could be recycled.

Jennifer- I had a new experience today. I ran out of space in writing my comments; so you get a whole panel for your response. Tesla will actually be building next door to TempurPedic. It is going to be a new facility. That area is just starting to be built up. I guess it will be an area of industrial development. Recent research suggests that almost all our activities result in carbon emission into the atmosphere but we all know that the vehicles we drive are major pollutants. Something that is also amazing about these cars is that they will not pollute with noise either. Our world is about to get quieter and we will be able to hear the birds and sounds of nature better. You will be able to go from 0 to 100 mph in a matter of seconds with no noise of an engine revving up.

Something else you might appreciate. We watched demonstration videos of sudden braking at high speeds on ice in far northern climates. There was no skidding. I want that too.

Eloise I wasn't referring to the disposal of the battery's. I was referring to the Production of them. Which probably isn't in Albuquerque but rather somewhere else. But none the less supposedly it will be destroying the environment where they are made.

Danny- Danny, I hadn't thought of that and don't have an answer. Maybe someone who knows more will offer a comment. It would be ironical, wouldn't it? Our solving one problem to discover we have created another. If there is a hazard, I hope someone is thinking or has already thought of healthful ways of coping with it.

Eloise, I'll have Jorge's put he green chilli on!
