Hot Air Balloons Fly in Fair Weather
The morning was perfect for balloon launching. The predawn hours were not as biting cold as they can be. The wind was down and dawn broke perfectly, soft and meltingly rosy as the sun glided above the peak of the Sandia Mountains. But I barely noticed. It was too tempting to keep my ringside seat at the Don Chalmers hospitality. I had to be on the field in the middle of the hubub of hundreds of balloons in traditional and non traditional shapes firing up at all once and waiting their turn for take off. The sensation is indescribable and I could only capture it in parts in pictures. But if, as they say, one picture is worth a thousand words, these put together should do a better job of telling the story than words could.

Eloise - Thanks for sharing the picture sure tells the story. I heard on the news there was a fatal balloon accident did it happen here?
I had a friend just mention to me yesterday that she went to the festival. I think she said about 600 balloons were launched in a 2 hour period...something mind boggling like that! Lucky you to be there. Cheers, Harley
Jennifer- As I was preparing to leave th fiesta park, a friend called me to say a friend had called her to say a balloon had gone down near her home in Bernalillo (town just north of the balloon fiesta park). Nobody on the field I spoke with seemed to have heard of it and I have still have not seen or heard of it in the news. Naturally, the news cast a shadow over the beauty and the exhilaration of the morning- a grim reminder that in the midst of life . . Thanks for commenting.
Harley- I am glad your friend had the opportunity to experience yesterday's beautiful launch. This year, just under 700 balloons (the maximum allowed) are participating. You have to experience being on the field under hundreds of balloon firing up and getting launched, to really understand what it feels like.
Jennifer- i just lost all of a second response to your question and am trying to reconstruct everything I said before in the passion of the moment. Sadly, I confirmed after replying to you, that the accident did take place. I will post rather than try to write a lengthey comment.
Eloise these are beautiful and unusual. I read your follow up blog on this first, it is a shame that such a beautiful and fun event had to experience the accident that it did.
George- Thank you. You are always so very kind.
