Social Networking Means Connecting Face-to-Face with Your Las Vegas Neighbors

The term “social networking” means different things to different people here in Las Vegas. While many assume the term to mean electronic outlets such as MySpace and Facebook, the building and maintenance of social networks is a process that has been around for as long as humans have joined together to form communities. And while internet tools are certainly gaining ground, they aren't the preferred means for neighbors to stay in touch with one another.

According to a survey by Pew Research, the following findings were culled from a poll of 2,258 adults, regarding online connections to neighbors and communities:

  • 22% of all adults signed up to receive alerts about local issues (such as traffic, school events, weather warnings or crime alerts) via email or text messaging.

  • 22% of all adults used digital tools to talk to their neighbors and keep informed about community issues.

  • 46% of American adults talked face-to-face with neighbors about community issues.

  • Only 9% of respondents exchanged emails with neighbors about community issues.

Of the 22% of adult Americans who receive alerts about community issues via text or email, those alerts include one or more of the following: school events, weather warnings, crime in the neighborhood, traffic congestion or road closings.

Urban, suburban, and rural adults are equally likely to have face-to-face discussions with their neighbors about community issues.
