In celebration of Earth Day (April 22), Home Depot is giving away ONE MILLION N:vision compact fluorescent light bulbs to any customer who visits any Home Depot store. There are a few restrictions. Offer is restricted to the continental US and it is first come, first serve. Once supplies run out, that's it. Its part of a promotion of Eco-line products that Home Depot is rolling out. As a nation, we are probably better off concentrating on reducing the amount of emission coming from our residences than our cars. The reason why I say this, is the fact posting on the Home Depot site. They estimate that by giving out these bulbs, people will save a combined 12 million dollars in annual energy costs and will reduce the amount of carbon emissions by 196 million pounds of carbon dioxide. That's the equivalent of removing 70,000 cars from the highway. We use billions of light bulbs and we aren't going to give up our cars any time soon. If everyone converted to the new energy efficient spiral fluorescent, just think how much money would be saved and how much less pollution would be generated. Even if you don't care for the environment, who doesn't like saving money?

thanks for the post. I think I will go by home depot and pick up however many they are giving one person. I'm sure they set some kind of limit for each person.
Just a note for anyone who may read this... I read a comment on another blog with the idea for real estate agents to include compact fluorescent bulbs in closing gift packages. If you pick up some free ones at Home Depot... you can try them in your own house or give them a way.
I use these lights in my home even though because they are supposed to last seven years. Even though they are hard to dispose of because of the mercury they contain. I imagine that it will cost more in fuel burned to reach the disposal site than the energy saved for the entire life of the bulb.
Pretty interesting stuff Charles, I never knew all this.
I may have to go get some and make sure they go with us when we move ;)
Thanks for the information. I'll be there! All of the bulbs in my house are flourescent, except for the ones with the little sockets, cant find those yet. My energy bill keeps going down every season, with every little thing I do to reduce my consumption. Most people here in my area of Florida have electric bills exceeding $200 per month in the summer. Some are over $300! My bill has gone from a high of $185 two years ago to a high of $125 last summer, and thats with a substantial rate increase. So, if you are hesitant to try some of the energy saving ideas posted in this group, or if you are skeptical about climate change, by doing a few small things around the house you can at least save quite a lot of money, and help save the planet.
Terry Haugen - STAGE it RIGHT!
Charles, good info and responsible posting. I hope that Home Depot doesn't run out of these bulbs and that each family gets at least one...think of the energy that we will be saving and the cost that they will save!!!!
I wish I saw this earlier since I was up that way the other day. I would go today, but it seems ironic to take my SUV out just to get a light bulb ; ). Gas here is well over $3/gallon!!!
Jacqulyn, They had a great ad in today's paper, I'll bet the stores were full
Jacqulyn - You scooped my paper - I knew nothing about it until I saw Sunday's Home Depot flyer as well. Big companies haven't figured out the way to "leak" info to the public through blogs yet, but the ones that do, thrive and spend less on marketing (like movie guys).
I decided I'd do more for the environment by staying home and saving the gallon and a half on gas, instead - someone else got my bulb.
