"Ian,Joe Isn't Reno and Sparks all about the Slot machines, blackjacks, lucky 9's, strip clubs, casinos??" One might say to me. Mm mm. Nope. Much more than that. You have no idea my friend...
I have never been the X-games type adrenaline junkie. But I grew up in an environment of small adventures, whether it's an expedition to the 'uncharted' neighborhood or playing catch up (armed with my bicycle) with the neighborhood bullies- (dogs that most probably hasn't been injected with anti-rabies shots.) - the best times of my life.
Why was it fun? good question.
Maybe because there was an element of danger that every boy, once in his life, craves for. And in so many ways, it doesn't really go away. Most of us men still look for that adventure whether in the office or somewhere else. It's there. It may have been dormant for years. But trust me, it is there.
So my buddy Joel calls me Sunday night, inviting me to test our skills and strength. The challenge: ascend the unforgiving 14 mile (depends on how far you want to go) bike ride famous for its picturesque view of Lake Tahoe: Flume Trail.
Arguably, the best view of a Lake anywhere in the world. This is the place where once you've been there, you would wish that your ashes would be thrown there once you depart earth.
On our way to the trail. The first view of the Lake ( If you're going from 395 South, Mt Rose.)
A brief stopover in Marilet lake. You will pass through this going to Flume Trail.
That's where we are going.(the light brown Mountain)
Flume trail has been named(by one of the top adventure magazines) as one of the Top 40 mountain bike trails in the United States. I have no qualms that it is.
A quick peak .(on top of the boulders...)
and here she is...captivating indeed
The only bad part here is you can't look at the view too long (if you are riding a bike like me. It's dangerous to look down when the only thing that is holding you from falling from the cliff is 5 feet of rough road)
Here's a quote from Howard Macy that kept on popping up in my head while I was there drowning in the beauty God created just for you and me..
' The spiritual life cannot be made suburban. It is always frontier, and we who live in it must accept and even rejoice that it remains untamed. '

Great photos - the next time my wife and I are in the area I'll make sure to pack fruit tarts.
Daniel,
Nice once. Right. Forget everything but the tarts.=)
Joe - I used to do the Flume every year. Max is a great guy! Nothing like it anywhere else!
For a real treat try staying in one of the cabins in the middle of winter. We cross country skied in, snow shoed out. That was a real treat!
Loved reading this post and taking a vicarious bike ride! :)
Mike,
Whow! thats awesome... I know I heard about the cabins.. sounds like a romantic adventure. Hopefully no invited bear guests. I hope to try cross-skiing this winter. Can't wait. I don't think i've met Max, but was really intrigued when i read about him in the website.
Lola,
Glad you enjoyed it Lola.. you should try riding it.=)
Joe, we just posted some coverage of the lake too. Thanks for yours... and hope you are having a good year down there.

Isn't Reno and Sparks all about the Slot machines, blackjacks, lucky 9's, strip clubs, casinos?
Don't forget the brothels, the biker gangs and the meth labs!
Hands down one of the best "local" posts I've seen yet. Awesome pictures and real life descriptions. I was "there" with you. Thank you!
