Important Information for the For Sale By Owner FSBO

The Security Checklist

1.  Don't give your schedule out over the phone.  For example:  if a buyer is inquiring about when he/she can come over to view your home, don't say "I work during the day and won't be home until 6pm" or "I'm going away for the weekend, but will be back on Monday".  Don't let strangers know when no one will be home!

2.  Always get the buyers phone first and then call them back to give any home details.

3.  Make sure you are never alone when showing the home.  If it can't be helped, make sure a friend/neighbor knows about your appointment to show.

4.  Have important phone #s programmed on your cell phone (which should be done anyway) and carry it with you during a showing.

5. Don't leave the buyer alone to roam the house.  If your house phone rings, let the answering machine get it.  If your doorbell rings, finish your showing first.

6.  Discuss with your children to not give out information about the home over the phone or strangers knocking on the door.  Or if they are old enough, discuss above strategies.

7.  Be aware of suspicious questions.  Ex:  "Do you have an alarm system?" "Does your home have a panic room?" "What time is so-and-so home?"

8.  Don't be afraid to ask for ID.  You can let the buyer know you will be asking for it when you set the appointment.

9.  Find out how many people will be coming to view the home.  When setting the appointment, ask if they are coming with spouse, children, parents, etc.

10.  Don't leave out valuables, weapons, personal information.
