Rothman's Restaurant is a famous landmark in the small town of East Norwich, NY located at the corner of Route 106 and Route 25A. I moved to East Norwich in 1971 and Rothman's Restaurant has been there long before I moved to the area. It was originally established in 1907 by the Rothman family of Oyster Bay, NY. Charles and Franziska Rothman invested their life saving and opened Rothman's Restaurant in East Norwich with Franziska's cooking. They attracted a loyal following of notable politicians and well heeled socialites. Theodore Roosevelt, our 26th president used to dine there when he was in town. Charles and Franziska's children continued the tradition of serving fine food and drink in a setting that was both comfortable yet felt pampered. Their reputation spread beyond East Norwich and celebrities were seen dining there.
At some point in the early ‘70s, Burt Bacharach, the singer bought the restaurant and built East Norwich Inn, the only hotel in town that sits behind Rothman's. Now there are plans to open a small shopping mall behind Rothman's Steakhouse and close the East Norwich Inn. Luckily because of the economic downturn, that plan is now on hold.
I remember my mother-in-law used to take me and my husband to Rothman's every Sunday night during the summer when she was living in town. She wintered in New York city. Since we were a regular, we sat on the same table at the corner across from the bar every Sunday. We had this German waiter who attended to us every week and he knew our names, what drink to serve us and what we ate. My mother-in-law always paid cash and gave generous tip to the waiter. We ate the same thing every Sunday.
Burt Bacharach owned Rothman's for few years and then it was sold and the façade was changed. A Greek Restaurant emerged. That did not last long. It was sort of not in keeping with the tradition. Then it changed hands again and another renovation took place. All through these changes, Gloria O'Rourke, one of the Rothman's children who was the Editor of the Oyster Bay Guardian, a local paper, kept watch and wrote something about the good times at the Old Rothman's. The new Rothman's sported a cupola which the old Rothman's did not have. However, the food is excellent as ever though a little bit on the expensive side. I took my children there for their birthdays and broke the bank but it was all worth it. Two years ago, I won a dinner for two on a For Sale by Owner Contest at my office, Century 21 Laffey Associates. I took my husband. It was a very special dinner and cost my manager $160.
The restaurant has a superb wine list and earned Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence. Rothman's Restaurant features tender, juicy lobster from Maine and prime dry aged beef, from porterhouse to sirloin steaks that grilled to perfection. The service is exceptional which makes for a memorable dining experience.
