As much as I love New York City and all it has to offer, I was always glad that I lived in the Suburbs. The relative quiet, the beautiful open places and peacefulness used to surround us everywhere on Long Island. Let's not forget Jones Beach-one of the biggest and most beautiful beaches in the world.

Long Island is known for many things including the development that is going on in nearly every single part of it. We are now, in most parts, overbuilt and overcrowded. The wide open spaces are gone to income-producing places. We have lost the peace AND the quiet.

The Long Island Expressway which most of us use to get around has earned the name of "The longest parking lot in the world." It stretches from all the way out East into New York City and there is no GOOD time anymore to travel it. It is a well deserved name.

I have grown up on Long Island and I grew as the Island did. Or TRIED. We are losing the beauty here-all in the name of "progress." Many of you know I haven't been home in quite some time while undergoing renovations on my home. When I arrived there the other day to check mail, I found a flyer in my mailbox. I live in the Village of Farmingdale Long Island and apparently there was a variance put in by some people on my block to put in a PARKING LOT...In the middle of a block of residential homes!

A meeting was called and if you were in opposition, you were asked to appear. Did the Village of Farmingdale let us know? No, actually it was a Real Estate Agency who works in Farmingdale and warned us of the extra noise, pollution and DECREASED PROPERY VALUES-just what we all want in this market.

They sent it too late; in speaking to my neighbors (who ALL opposed it), they had gotten it too late as well. I believe with no one there to oppose it, we are soon to have a parking lot in the middle of our block. Let's see how far Farmingdale Village is going to push it's residents.....

It reminded me of a song that I've always loved-unfortunately, I didn't realize the impact of that song at the time. I'm sure many of you remember it-and see it happening around YOU, too. When is "PROGRESS" going to stop?
