New York Feng Shui--What IS Mt. Misery on Long Island? (LOCALISM FEATURED)

A New York Feng Shui Consultant Explores “Hauntings

Whenever people think of “A Haunting” in relation to Long Island—just 45 minutes from New York City they automatically think of The Amityville Horror House. Made famous by a book and movie of the same name, it claimed that a house located in Amityville Long Island was haunted due to the terrible incident in the home.

An entire family murdered—it later revealed that one of the sons, Ronald DeFao had killed his entire family while they were sleeping. Although most New York Feng Shui Consultants believe very much in Predecessor Energy, I believe this later turned out to be a hoax.

There IS one place on Long Island New York that I have visited once before and tend to stay away from. It was the earliest stories of Hauntings I’d ever heard as a child. I went once at night and found the place SO eerie, I had never traveled the road again. Until recently.

I am speaking of Mt. Misery Road located in Huntington New York. Mt. Misery did NOT get it’s NAME from the Haunting, it was actually called that from earlier settlers who found the roads too difficult to travel on. Some people say there are UFO’s there. Many have seen ghosts wandering around in the darkness. The road at night is completely dark and very narrow---actually there is nothing to indicate the END of the road except a piece of wood---pretty easy to miss.

There are also reported to be “Men in Black” there. Residents report seeing these men quite often, and they are always spotless….even in the rain they are reported to be dry. History says there was a hospital on the grounds at one time. Some say it was a psychiatric hospital that burned down, reportedly taking the residents with it. In the end, Mt. Misery is best known for “MARY’S GRAVE.” The ghost of Mary who is buried nearby and died a tragic death on the road, she now refuses to leave. She is said to be a being who is earthbound. Say what you will, Long Island has it’s share of Haunted Areas. It’s interesting that many of my photos from that day DID not come out…..hmmmm.

My GPS is not going to like that road -- and any road with Mt. Misery seems to mean "Negative" energy to me.  I think I'll take a pass!

I was scared just reading this! There are so many scary things in your neck of the woods. I love that you share!  Thanks so much but I never want to visit this road!

Carole- No way, I will not go! Have a great week!

Carole - great pics! But it looks too creepy for me.

( 01/25/09 09:51PM ) — Sharon Lee

Hi Carole-I think I would definitely not want to go there in the evening. Rather spooky. You got some great photos though. What made you decide to go there. I thought Feng shui was all about positive energy. That place must give off a lot of negative vibes. Glad you made it out with no problems. :-)

Wow, thats a spookie post and I was just about to go to sleep.  I like scary movies and tv shows, but I am a little bit of a chicken when it comes to real life.  You wont find me out in Misery Road anytime soon, I will be setting up shop in the city, happy as a clam.

Very eery! My daughter would love this, looks like an episode of Ghost Hunters!

Hi Carol...Maybe you have another calling by telling us all Ghost Stories at Halloween with your own Ghost Webinar...mmm food for thought ?

Cheers, thanks for the history on Mt. Misery.

Carole, I feel like I am reading a horror story, but a real one. Sounds like a spooky place.

( 01/25/09 11:06PM ) — Carol Smith

Please don't take this the wrong way ... but there is no way in Hades that I'm going to Mt. Misery Rd.  If I come up there I'd appreciate it if you'd find something else to show me.  LOL

( 01/25/09 11:11PM ) — Carol Smith

PS - I'm scrolling through the directory on the TV and guess what's on?  Amityville Horror!  Yikes!!!

( 01/25/09 11:30PM ) — Maria Morton

Carole, I almost didn't read the words. See, when there are pictures, I scroll down through all of the pictures first and then come back and read the words. I love the forest but these pictures did not appeal to me. I did not like them. In my mind, I thought "what is she seeing here that I'm not?"  So, I thought I'd better go over the words and see what you were trying to capture. Then I realized that maybe you did capture what is actually there. I still don't find those woods appealing and probably wouldn't go myself. Energy like that makes me ill. But thanks for the warning.

Soooo...what were you doing down there?  I bet you flew around all your positive energy and warded off the negs. :)

( 01/25/09 11:44PM ) — Sheldon Neal -- That British Agent --

... oooh the chills I just got reading that !!!!

What a spooky story !!! ... well except for the shoes in the tree !!!!! LOLOLOLL !!!!!

... nice break from the norm Carole ! Thanks as always :o)

Carole,

! think I am go1ng to sleep with the lights on tonight. I love agood ghost story and you are good at telling one.

Carole,
What a chilling story--and why did you decide to go back?  :-)

Glad you were not going too fast Carole or you may have joined the ghosts there.  There are many places where such things happen.  For some reason although I am petrified of horror movies the thought of spirits do not scare me as much.  Of course I wouldn't say that on a dark road at night but here in the sunshine of a Monday morning it seems less threatening.

Looks like a preety cool place to me. I am a disbeliever until I see something with my own eyes. Iwould love to see something supernatural.

Carole--I think I would just avoid hanging out there...The ghost stories are frighting enough but I'll bet with the publicity, lots of strange people hang out there too...waiting to scare siteseers!

Carole - You have the makings here for a good movie ! Or novel : ) .  I get the creeps in places like that.

Carole - I'm glad I'm reading this today instead of last night.  I wouldn't have gotten any sleep.  The shoe picture really creeped me out!

good morning Carole,

It looks like a very strange and forbidding place.....are there houses on that road? Where does the road go to beyond the large branch that is blocking it? I wonder if there are any old foundations from dwellings in the woods?

Interesting story and this is one place I think I would want to see if I come and visit...

((-:

Jo

That is too creepy. The pics really added to the creepiness! Think I'll stay away from that road! Although my hubby would want to drive down it on Halloween at midnight or something crazy like that!! ~A:)

Carole  - Congratulations on the feature.  It is a great story and great pictures.

Joan, I have to say it was interesting going back after so many years.  It's almost a rite of passage around here, every teen visits Mt. Misery--and adults too!

Cristal, We actually have a LOT of "haunted" places here on Long Island.  Kings Park is notorious as well.......an old psychiatric hospital.

Katerina, I can't say I blame you a bit!  At least it was daytime, I would NOT go back there at night.

Tanya, Creepy it is.  Some other places on Long Island have quite a history as well.

Sharon, I was not far from there and hadn't been there in many, many years.  I wanted to see what it FELT like during the daytime and I also go to people's homes that have experienced what they believe is spirit energy.  It's not uncommon on Long Island.

Morgan, Hope it didn't keep you up :)  I'm always happy when I'm in Manhattan...I love it there!

Kevin & Monica, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Ghost Hunters went there, it's pretty famous :)

Fred, I kind of like ghost stories, I studied the paranormal way back when.  This place IS eerie.

Gary, If you ever come to New York---leave it OFF your list of places to see :)

Carol, There's too much beauty here in the summer...I have LOTS of truly gorgeous places in mind that you would love.

Maria, That's interesting that you go to the pictures first....I'll have to try that.  I love to stroll through the wood usually but don't like these either and don't feel at all comfortable being in this area.  I was wondering whether it came across in the pictures.  Funny that when I left it felt SO good to be out of there!

Sally, Just nearby it and figured I hadn't been there in many years.  I wondered if I still felt the same---I do!

Sheldon, I can't do "work" all the time.  We have some interesting things here on Long Island--and this is one of them.  It's actually pretty famous :)

Eloise, Thank you.  I think the pictures told the story better then I did.  It's a very eerie place to go and I was glad to leave.

Cynthia, I think EVERY teenager on Long Island goes there...and doesn't go back.  At least I didn't.  I was close by and it was daytime---thought I'd see if it was still so creepy.

Paddy, I wouldn't go back at night, honestly.  I went once and hated it.  It's actually a cut through road but not many people use it, we'd rather fight the traffic.

Bill, I have--seen things with my own eyes.  Not here but on occasion in people's homes.  And FEEL it too.  Some of my clients have problems like this and they're not at all crazy.  I've been in homes too many times to be a disbeliever.

Teri, People drive by and people stop but there are actually homes down the side streets and people live in them.  Interesting that some report they see some things and some don't.

Christopher & Stephanie, I'm sure there is a movie or book about it...I know it's on a website as one of the 10 most haunted places in the US.

Donna, They didn't and still don't look like SHOES to me.  I wondered if anyone else picked up on that..........

Jo, You're the ONLY one that would go!  I think beyond that big branch which you can't cross is where the old hospital was.  And yes, there are homes on side streets off that road.  Some people have seen things (including UFO's) and others haven't.  I didn't visit the gravesite  --  did NOT want to go!

Alisha, For as long as I can remember I've heard about that road.  Everyone here on Long Island has and most visit it.  Nightimes are awful....it wasn't even pleasant during the day!

( 01/26/09 07:08PM ) — Rich Dansereau

Except for the graffiti and shoes it looks quite pleasant; of course the story does change one's perspective. The shoes seem to be in many places but I am not sure of the significance. Check out this post (it will open in a separate window) by Julie Kippen regarding the shoes! BTW, Julie does some of the best photo blogs anywhere.

What does feng shui have to say about "hauntings?"

Carole,

I grew up on Long Island...not too far from Amityville. And I saw the movie so I can relate to it.

( 01/26/09 07:14PM ) — Michelle Finnamore Advantage Staging

As a someone who actually has seen ghosts (stop laughing now all you non believers) I wouldn't go there for all the tea in China!

The shoes and 6's look like there were smart aleck kids there (during the day?) trying to scare people. The first picture looks like a nice place, but then it gets creepier. Would I go there? NO WAY!

It would be interesting to find out the whole story though.

( 01/26/09 07:38PM ) — Laurie Mindnich

Carole! Sean's Uncle, Judge Tom Stark, was the judge at the Amityville murder trial, and is going to be coming out with a book detailing the politics behind the whole thing, and the experience.

I'm going to get you an autographed copy. Is that good or bad Feng Shui? :)

( 01/26/09 07:56PM ) — Kat DeLong, REALTOR DRE# 01235311

Holy-Moly Carole... I have goosebumps all over. The pic's, especially the first, really gives me the creeps.    I didn't know that Ronald DeFao had killed his entire family while they were sleeping.

BOO! Okay, I really had shivers up my back reading this post, and was almost afraid that something was going to catch me by surprise in scrolling through the photos...I', home, ALONE, at night...so that didn't relax me a bit! :-)

I love stuff like this but when it came time for me to walk down that road... I would scare myself to death, even if nothing happened. Great post!

Quite a spooky story. I bet it is a lot different at night. Why don't you get some cool nighttime pics for us- LOL!! No thanks!

( 01/26/09 09:10PM ) — Jo Adams

Ok Jo... I'll go with you!  Looks like a cool place and I love gravesites. Looks like the setting for Blair Witch Project!

Since we're on the subject of supernatural.... has anyone ever had to do a house cleansing to rid the home of 'bad or negative' energy and how did it work out?

( 01/26/09 09:25PM ) — Elizabeth Ramsey Cooper-Golden

I am such a chicken, you wouldn't catch me anywhere near that place, lol.  Wow, so much tragedy in that area it seems...the 6 6 6 would have me turning tail and heading for the hills!

Geeze --- sounds scary -- good post. Thanks for sharing. All the best.

I have grown an attachment to my GPS system.. roads like this, they come in handy

( 01/27/09 01:53AM ) — Jay Markanich

Carole - in Washington DC they have a haunted house tour.  I don't know how many houses are on the tour, but it is apparently very popular with visitors!  Having lived here all my life, of course I have never gone...

( 01/27/09 05:26AM ) — Shuki Haiminis

I have a friend in the city that loves to see haunted places...I will show her this post so she can read more about it.

( 01/27/09 05:31AM ) — Bob and Richelle Ward, Realtors, ABR

I'm originally from Long Island and there is also a Mt. Misery section located in Sag Harbor (yep - in the Hamptons).

( 01/27/09 08:24AM ) — Deb Brooks, Lake Livingston Real Estate

Carole, it's too early in the morning for all the goosebumps you just gave me! Whoa. The road in the first pic looks relatively normal but the rest get really wierd...wonder why many of the pics didn't come out?

I remember you telling us about bad feng shui when a house sits at the end of a T. I wonder what it does to have the never, never ending of a road running into a dead tree going to nowhere? Ick. Are there any houses on the road? Or, do they leave it uninhabited? Why did you have to go there?

Okay, I'm nosey. This is a very well written post. Thanks for the wake up call my friend!

Later in the rain~Deb

( 01/27/09 08:47AM ) — Sharon Paxson Newport Beach Real Estate

Carole - wow that sounds like an adventure. It would be very eerie to have the road end like that with no lights, etc. Strange how your pictures did not turn out. Sounds scary! Definitely not a night drive!

I am not afraid of too many things (spiders ) , but places called names like Mt. Misery, I stay away from :)  - enjoyed the post !

( 01/27/09 10:15AM ) — Rebecca Gaujot Lewisburg WV Realtor

Don't believe Mt. Misery Road in Huntington New York will be on my list of "Places to Visit".

( 01/27/09 12:20PM ) — Susan Gough Hometowne real estate St. Marys co., MD

We have many "haunted" homes in our "neck of the woods" . I'm in Southern MD. so many spirits that are seen or heard here are from the Civil War. These do not seem to be evil however. Your business sounds very interesting however. What a great idea! Susan

Yikes Carol, I got the creeps looking at the photos while I read the post. The pics remind me of  the woods in the Blair Witch movie. Congrats on the feature!

( 01/27/09 01:42PM ) — Team Honeycutt

Don't you love a good ghost story?  We have a historic district in Concord NC that is filled with interesting tales and hauntings.  I love to share them with clients that are new to the area.

Kathy

Dear Carole,

This seems like such a dreary spooky place. How on earth were you able to stay log enough to take all these pictures?!? I am glad you made it out in one piece!

Betina

Carole,

I have book marked this post.  My father grew up on Long Island and I am anxious to ask him about this when I see him this Thursday:-)

Carole,

That road looks spooky even in daylight, so how deep-reaching will it be at night. Besides, someone, a ghost or Mary or something, tampered with your camera without you even knowing it. Run!

Ahhhh, just off of Round Swamp Road! I know it well. We used to hang out near there as kids! But I can assure you Carole, those are NOT my shoes and I did NOT paint those numbers on the poles!!!

Great post and concratulations on the feature blog status!

You've earned it with this one.

Late getting back here, sorry!  My goodness someone must like scary stories :)

Joan,Thanks for the kind comment.  One of our many places of Hauntings here on the Island.

Rich, I will go to check out the post, thank you for mentioning it.  The shoes--they don't look exactly like shoes to me.

Rene, Feng Shui believes in Predecessor Energy so we believe they can be real.  I've been in many homes that clients believe are haunted and sometimes hear and see things as well....

Neal, I didn't know you grew up here.  That area of Amityville is really beautiful, right on the water.  I have always wondered if it was a hoax.

Michelle, Believe me, I'm not laughing....neither are many of my clients.  We've seen them and experienced them first hand.

Linda, The whole story goes back a LONG way....from the days the hospital grounds were there and UFO sightings were popular.  I was very young when I first heard about it....

Laurie, I would LOVE an autographed copy!  It WAS pollitical or did the son do it?  I believe he did but the "hauntings" were not real....they thought they would make money off it and they did!

Kat, Incredibly awful thought, isn't it?  That's supposedly what happened though from what we later learned the Lutz family bought the house thinking they could make a bundle---and did.  Laurie though apparently knows the entire story!

Mara, I'm sorry!  It's a creepy place day OR night but I have to say it was interesting going back after so long.

Kelsey, I thought about leaving the car and walking around.  To be honest I was happy to get back in after the pictures--it doesn't FEEL good there!

Jo, I do that quite often actually.  Space Clearings are for negative or "stuck" energy and sometimes (yes) spirit energy.  They work very well although one place I went back three times before the activity the family was experiencing stopped.

Elizabeth, I didn't like seeing that either.  Probably is high school kids but it was a creepy site.

Bob & Carolin, Thank you, it was frightening.  I wish all the pictures came out.

Roland, You and I both. Although some places on Long Island it loses the signal and I get lost anyway!

Jay, I would go to that and probably enjoy it.  They always call the Winchester House the most haunted home in the world and I thought that might be interesting in a weird way.

Shuki, She should just Google Haunted Long Island, there are more places then I would have thought....and a restaurant in the city that's pretty famous down by the pier.

Bob &  Richelle, I didn't know that....but you can believe if I'm out in Sag Harbour I'll look for it!  Thank you for letting me know.

Deb, It makes me wonder too.  Maybe it's from all the stories but the place was creepy as a teen and still is today in the daylight.  There ARE homes off the side roads near there.....some of the residents report strange things and others don't from what I've heard and read.

Sharon, I wonder too why so many didn't come out.....it wasn't raining or anything unusual.

James, I think I am more afraid of spiders and mice then ghosts :(

Rebecca, We have some BEAUTIFUL places here too!  Places you would like!

Susan, I actually would not want to go to Gettysburgh which I have heard from SO many people is frightening.  I do know on Long Island there were many fights...Indians, then the Dutch took it over--and on and on.  There were actually many battles here as well.  I love my job!

Debbie, That movie actually really scared me!  I'm not easily scared but something about that movie got to me!

Allen, I like to share stories as well.  I didn't know you had an area of Concord that was "haunted" and would love if you'd share some stories on AR one day!

Betina, When I got out of the area I wondered :)  And felt SO much better!!

Rebecca, I would be curious to know what your father knows about it--although I'm sure he's familiar with it I wonder if he's been on it.

Esko, Thankfully I didn't see Mary but I wouldn't go into the forest---OR near the gravesites which are right there---I'd seen enough.

Craig, I KNEW those shoes must have belonged to someone on AR!!  I don't know how in the world you hung out there--one ride at night as a teen did it for me!  BTW, could you please stop painting the area with spooky things? --lol

Sounds like Mt. Misery lives up to its name.  Did the name come after all of the hauntings or before.  Congratulations on the Featured post.

Creepy story! I know I wouldn't want to go out there at night.

Donna, Before if you can believe it.  It was originally named Mr. Misery because the early settlers couldn't pass there :)

Lizette, The teens go there---and Ghost Hunters.  It's not a road I'd be on at night after that one time.

( 01/29/09 08:36AM ) — Sheldon Neal -- That British Agent --

I just had to come back and check in again on this post Carole !!!

What a fascinating thread this has become ! Did you ever imagine you would have created such a buzz with so many people touched by your creepy story !!!! (I mean that with complete respect of course :o)

I love it ! - I'm so intrigued, I may take a drive across the bridge some time at dusk just to experience the 'chill' first hand !!!

lol

Great job again Carole

Sheldon, You really make me laugh :)  I had no idea people liked really creepy stuff--maybe just a break from Real Estate for a time.  Do NOT go there at night....you will not enjoy it, trust me!  And you'll get lost (and have very little room to turn around :)  It's NOT at ALL fun at night--OR during the  day!

( 01/29/09 08:58AM ) — Sheldon Neal -- That British Agent --

.... Note to self:  .... "Rethink trip to Mt. Misery" ...

Note to Sheldon:  "Double RE-THINK TRIP TO MT. MISERY"    Think instead "Hamptons"

( 01/30/09 10:14AM ) — Sheldon Neal -- That British Agent --

... good advice me feels !!!

Loved the pictures, and no I wouldn't go there at night.  Maybe during the day out of curiosity, but never at night :)

I received a call a year ago from a buyer four states away from me (I'm in Ohio) inquiring about the Amityville home, and she was convinced I had it for sale, which obviously, I did not.  When I told her I had no idea about this home, she wasn't convinced.

It's weird how common sense and logic can go out the window.  I personally haven't met a ghost <can't say I'm looking forward to meeting one> so I can't comment on this, but the old saying: life is stranger than fiction is relevant I think.

I must admit, everyone once in a blue moon, when I am showing homes, I will enter one home that just totally creeps me out and gives me the willies, very bad vibes.  Not sure why.  Who knows...

Sheldon, Trust me, you do NOT want to go there :)  Then again, Amityville is not far.....hmmmm

Kathy, We well went at night as teens...and then I stayed away.  Geez, that was EONS ago. We have lots of "haunted" places here.

Chris, I am more then familiar with the Amityville Horrow House...where a couple has been living peacefully for years.  I do believe the Lutz family bought that house just to make this a scam. Still, it was a horrible tradgedy and I personally wouldn't want it.  I get calls for Space Clearings from many clients and have experienced some scary things........probably why you get "creeped out" in some homes.  I don't doubt it anymore.

Carol, I'm an AR newbie, and I just happened on your post about Mt. Misery. You just brought back memories I didn't know I still had!

I grew up in Plainview, LI (I won't say when!), and visiting Mt. Misery at night was absolutely a right of passage for teens! A group of kids would decide to go, and then dare a lot of other kids to come along. Scary, but we all came back!
