CHANGES TO THE TAPPAN ZEE BRIDGE

Tappan Zee Bridge details due in fall

Construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge could begin in 2013 and finish in 2017.

A picture of what the new Tappan Zee Bridge will look like could emerge as soon as November, when the state gives the public a progress report on its $6.4 billion plan to replace the aging structure.

The November round of public meetings will find the Department of Transportation, the New York State Thruway Authority and Metro-North Railroad well-advanced in the formal environmental review of five alternatives for building a new bridge and introducing bus rapid transit and commuter rail to the Interstate 287 corridor.

The five alternatives, originally identified in September and sketched for stakeholders in a special briefing Wednesday, differ primarily in how the mass-transit elements are developed — decisions that will determine, in part, the nature of the new bridge as well as the sections of I-287 leading to and away from it.
