Oyster Bay, NY is rich in culture and history. Oyster Bay is Teddy Roosevelt's hometown. Everywhere you look, there is a footprint of Teddy Roosevelt. There is a park called Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and the elementary school is named Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School. Teddy Roosevelt had his summer white house here at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay Cove from 1902 to 1908. He worshiped at Christ Church in Oyster Bay. He had an office at the Moore Bldg in Oyster Bay and received phone calls at Snouder's Drug Store in Oyster Bay. He participated at the Fourth of July parade here and rode the Long Island Railroad in Oyster Bay. There is a bust of Teddy Roosevelt in front of the Town Hall and a TR statue by sculptor, A. Phiminster Proctor now located in front of the Boys and Girls Club of Oyster Bay which will be moved soon to the triangle piece of land across the Boys and Girls Club, as a welcoming entrance to Oyster Bay.
Oyster Bay, NY is a small picturesque town on a peninsula on the North Shore of Long Island with Victorian homes from bygone era on a tree-lined street. Oyster Bay has a lot to offer the residents and visitors alike. Besides the beautiful beaches, Oyster Bay has magnificent parks, arboretum, museums - Raynham Hall and Earle-Wightman House of the Oyster Bay Historical Society. The Boys and Girls Club of Oyster Bay commissioned Mort Kunstler, a famous historical painter, to do a painting of Roosevelt at "Fourth of July Oyster Bay Parade". Copies of the print are now for sale at the Boys and Girls Club at the corner of Berry Hill Rd and Route 106 as a fundraiser.
Just as we have the Roger Bahnik Boys and Girls Club for the kids, we also have the Doubleday-Babcok Senior Center for the seniors. It is a place where seniors can socialize and keep healthy with exercise, well balanced nutrition and much, much more. In 2008 alone, the Center served 1775 seniors with various programs and services.
Nearby is Planting Fields Arboretum, 409 acres of beauty and the most visited state park in the area. Here is a vast collection of trees and several gardens for your pleasure. Beauty abounds at this park, and it is always beautiful at any time of the year. In the summer time, there are music concerts galore. Several garden clubs use the Burns Horticultural Center for their flower shows and meetings. Rose lovers should visit in the spring or summer when the rose arbors and rosebeds are in bloom. There is an annual rose show in June at Planting Fields Arboretum sponsored by the Long Island Rose Society.

Oyster Bay area is served by three schools and 3 fire departments. There is the Teddy Roosevelt elementary school, the Vernon Middle School and the Oyster Bay High School. East Norwich, the next town shares the same schools with Oyster Bay. There is also the St. Dominic Elementary School and St. Dominic High School for those who want a catholic education. Nearby are three private school - East Wood School in Oyster Bay Cove, Friends Academy and Portledge School in nearby Locust Valley. For the safey of the community, we have two fire departments (Atlantic Steamer Fire Company and the Teddy Boys Fire Company. Helping out close by is the East Norwich Fire Department.
Oyster Bay, NY is famous statewide with their annual Oyster Festival in the Fall. This festival draws around 200,000 people into town during the two-day event in the Fall. Oyster Bay residents enjoy the amenities of a beautiful park with the nearby Waterfront Center. The water at the Long Island Sound is a big playground to those with watercraft from little sunfish to big yacht. You might even see some celebrities around.
There are 64 homes for sale in Oyster Bay as of July 28, 2009. There were 21 properties sold in Oyster Bay in 2009 compared to 22 properties sold in Oyster Bay in 2008. Few years ago, the town imposed a building moratorium after a builder tore down the Youngs family home on Burtis Ave and Kellogg St. and built 3 huge houses on the property. Next to it, another house, a small red Dutch colonial was sold and tore down and in its place another huge house stands now. These new homes and another one on Summers St. upset the old time residents and it also triggered the formation of a group called Save the Jewels by the Bay.
Oyster Bay, NY is one of the most attractive places to live, work and play in Long Island, New York. Thanks to the commitment of local residents who care a lot about their community as evidenced in their tremendous participation in community organization in town. Civic and fraternal organizations abound and all you have to do is call somebody and chances are she/he is involved in some kind of organization and love to bring you in.
