Long Island NY: Bookcases, how do you accessorize it?

Bookcase, how do you accessorize it without making it look over done! Most homes that I've seen here on Long Island NY, have overloaded their bookcase so much it's busting at the seams! It's to bad bookcases don't come with instruction on how to accessorize it, but there are general guidelines on what to do and what not to do.

Do's:

  1. Do use groups of threes or odd numbers.
  2. Scale items appropriately.
  3. You can use a color scheme to tied in the room.
  4. Use different textures.
  5. You can use plants, but remember scale.
  6. Use basket for extra storage.

Don't
  1. Don't try to fill in all the spaces.
  2. Don't put only books or only accessories on the shelves mix it up.
  3. Don't overdo it with too many baskets.

I have a saying that I use all the time (drives my husband crazy!). If it's not aesthetically pleasing to the eye then it's no good! Take a step back and look at it. Is it pleasing to the eye? Does your eyes have a place to rest, a sense of calm? Or is it so busy you don't know where to look first? Staging bookcase for resale is different then staging bookcase for redesign. Staging bookcases for resale should be a little less cluttered, so pay greater attention to that. Otherwise the concept is the same. Bookcase may take some time to accessorize but if done right it can have a great impact on the room.
