Drastic changes are they worth the cost when staging your home? That is a difficult question and I have often found myself wondering if I should even consider making the suggestion. I recently was watching "The unsellable" HGTV. And in this episode she suggested that the home owner replace their dinette set. Although I agreed that the change was dramatic, the cost to replace the set was $450! Pretty hefty price in my opinion. Most home owners, I think, won't go for such an expense, unless they were planning to change the set.
As home stagers, we have to work within the clients budget, and although I would love to see the home owners, at times, change out their furniture, I think it's unrealistic to ask them. According to a study conducted by the the HomeGains, it's the small improvements that paid the biggest dividends. So even though we might not like the furniture, making small improvements, like covers for the sofa, or chair covers to add more piazza to a dining set, is more reasonable then changing out the furniture. These are still drastic changes but without the extra cost.
As a home stager and a decorator, I like watching those shows on HGTV. But there are times when I watch those show and can't help but wonder, what are home owners thinking? They're thinking that staging is too expensive! I can't afford making those drastic changes! That's to bad, because staging doesn't have to be expensive if it's done right. In the end, working with the home owners assets and making minor changes will get the job done. Would I prefer to change out their furniture? Yes, sometimes, but that isn't always realistic. Working with the home owners furniture and making the necessary changes to improve the look, that's the way to go.
