Richmond Hill, NY Community Information

A historically rich neighborhood, Richmond Hill is located in the borough of Queens, a moraine created
by rocks and debris formed while glaciers descended down North America. Richmond Hill is part of
Queens Community Board 9 and 10. Its boundaries are Kew Gardens to the North, Jamaica to the East,
Ozone Park to the South, Woodhaven to the West and Glendale and Forest Hill to the Northwest. Well
known for its large-frame single family homes, most preserved since the turn of the 20th century.

Richmond Hill is in close proximity to John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Van Wyck Expressway
and Belt Parkway. It is conveniently located to the outer boroughs of Brooklyn, Long Island and with the
Long Island Railroad or subway to Manhattan.

A culturally explosive community, one of the popular events is their annual Phagwah (Holi) parade. Holi
is the Hindu celebration for the New Year. This normally occurs in the winter months at the beginning
of the year. It is almost a Carnival like experience where the revelers throw dye and colored powder
to chase away the winter blues and invite the vibrant colors of Spring! The parade follows along
Liberty Avenue and up to Phil Rizutto Park (Smokey Oval Park) where it is filled with music and cultural
performances.

Local transportation includes the J/Z, part of MTA’s elevated subway lines and also the southern port for
the A train.

Richmond Hill is full of diversity, since the early 70s South Asian Indians and Caribbean Indians have
populated and nurtured their neighborhood with thriving businesses.

Neighborhood schools include the P.S. Oxford School, M.S. 137 America’s School of Heroes, and the
historical Richmond Hill High School.

Private schools include Bethlehem Christian Academy, Hebrew Academy-West Queens, Holy Child Jesus
School, Islamic Elementary School, Our Lady of the Cenacle, Theatre Street School, St. Mary Gate of
Heaven

One of their main landmarks is the Church of Resurrection, an 1874 Episcopalian Church the oldest
house of worship in Richmond Hill.

Because Richmond Hill is filled with so much diversity, there are many houses of worship through out
the community. Due to the large community of West Indian’s, there are especially many Hindu temples
and Mosques.
