New York state consumers could get a break next year buying certain energy-efficient appliances.
Gov. David Paterson is asking for federal approval of a program that would give rebates to people who buy Energy Star-rated appliances. The program would be paid for through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Paterson says the state could issue 170,000 rebates totaling $16.8 million.
It would reduce the cost of refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers and dishwashers during President's Week in February.
Rebates would range from $50 to $105 for a single unit, with more savings on packages. Consumers who document recycling older appliances could get additional savings.
The Federal Department of Energy must first approve the plan.
