Just to the North of Clayton and across the Montgomery County line into Miami County is the small town of West Milton. A first in this series that I can honestly call a "hangout" during my teenage years. The summer nights could find me in my '57 Chevy Bel Air driving north on State Route 48 headed for the Dairy Queen in West Milton.
The presence of the Stillwater River and lush, fertile farm land brought settlers to this area and as early as 1803 a settlement was established. In 1817 the village of Milton (named for the poet John Milton) became the village of West Milton (there was already a village named Milton in the east) and was incorporated in 1834.
West Milton has (according to the 2000 census) 4,645 citizens and is served by the Milton-Union school system. As in many small towns the school system is the recipient of much of the pride in the community.
You can find pictures of bulldogs throughout the town (Bulldog is the Milton Union mascot) during the school year.
West Milton has always been a friendly community, proud of their small town and the sites surrounding it.
Right downtown on the corner of State Routes 571 and 48 is Overlook Falls. Ok, it isn't Niagara, but it is right downtown in a small town in the Midwest. The falls were created in 1902, yes man made, as a tourist attraction for the then village of West Milton. I'll come back and put a picture of the falls, Proxy errors now.
