Golden Retriever Rescue Organization

Are you thinking of adding a dog to your life. What a wonderful gift you'll be giving yourself. I am a dog lover, and am particularly partial to Golden Retrievers. They are known for their willingness to please, their gentleness with children and elderly, and their overall good-natured temperament.

We currently have Dudley, aged 12, and just added Buddy to our fold. Actually, Buddy is a heartworm-positive foster we are caring for while he recuperates. He is an absolute delight. I have no idea why someone would have given him up, let along not providing him with the monthly medication necessary to prevent heartworm.

The reason for this post is to promote our local Golden Retriever rescue organization, G.R.I.N. A strictly volunteer organization, they were able to save and find homes for almost 200 Goldens in 2007 alone. The area covered by G.R.I.N is basically NE Ohio and a portion of NW PA. Check out their website at: www.grinrescue.org. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Christine, I have two goldies -- they're not rescues, but they're the most enthusiastic loving good-hearted dogs I've ever experienced. We thought long and hard about having adopting a rescue and, at the time I just wasn't sure I could handle a dog that might have been abused. With our absolute delight in these two loveable things, I think maybe a rescue is somewhere in our future. I know there are rescue groups here in Washington state too!

All the best to you for taking care of these lovely creatures. It is sad when owners do not take proper care and animals suffer as a result.

I tried to rescue, but the rescue requirement was that we have a completely fenced yard and to dig 2 feet below each fence wall, install chicken wire to prevent dig-outs. Our HOA would not allow. My last dog was a handicapped dog gotten as a puppy. Pleae counsel your association to interview prospective owners and make placement decisions on a case-by-case basis.

Nice Blog Christine!

I agree with Vickie, the Rescues should look at each home and owner on a case by case basis.  My yard is over an acre and I couldn't fence it.  I have rescued 2 goldens now and walk them each day to get them their exercise.  I do not leave them outside without supervision - they are tied to my deck with about 20 feet of room to roam.  This works for us and wouldn't allow them to run away and be hurt or lost. (My, that would break my heart)

My neighbors watch me when I walk in the mornings so they can decide how to dress their kids for school.  If I walk with hat, gloves and scarf over my mouth they now it's REALLY cold, if I walk with hat is somewhat cold and without a hat it must be over 35 degrees and not raining.... you get the picture.  My goldens get their walk EVERY day, rain or shine, snow or sleet...... even have little booties for when the road has been salted..... LOL

God Bless you for taking in a rescue!

I have a golden and I would like to know how  the rest of you deal with all the cleaning that has to be done.  All the baseboards get filthy right after cleaning them, the doors and windows have lots of reddish dirt on them (we live in clay soil area), and the fur is everywhere.  Is there a secret that I don't know about?  Oh, and she stinks.  Dog smell galore!  My husband is crazy about her, but I find the smell and cleaning a huge chore.  Do you all get your goldens groomed every week?  Is that the secret?  please help if you can.
