Blogging from GlenMar Ranch, Caddo, OK (Part 3) Taffy The Bull's New Tags

They named me "Taffy." So embarrassing...Taffy... Like "A boy named Sue." Embarrassing!

Taffy is an ususual name for a working ranch bull. That's what happens when you let a five year old name your animals. Kristin named Taffy. Yesterday I tricked him out in his new bright orange fly tags so he could impress the ladies. That red tag in his left ear is his number tag.

GlenMar ranch is a cow/calf operation. When the young ladies (heifers) come of age to be bred, you want their first calf to be relatively small. That's where Taffy comes in. His daddy was an itinerant Coriente and his momma was a "black baldy." As bulls go, he's on the small side, weighing in at about 1,400 pounds.

Yesterday four of us worked most of the herd. By the end of the day, only one of us had been kicked, and there were no broken bones, thank God!

Today's cleanup work consisted of moving seven "replacement heifers" to the bull pasture and bringing Taffy there to make their acquaintance. A good time was had by all. The heifers and the bull cooperated. "God's in his heaven; all's right with the world." (Who knows that reference from their school days?)

Taffy arrives at the Bull Pasture.

The ladies (replacement heifers) arrive at the Bull Pasture.

Mike- Wonderful photos, as usual! You are a great photographer and creative as well.

Ya know, Mike - while you're out there herding bulls, we're back home herding cats.  Ever try that?  Isn't as easy as bulls.  LOL  Hope you're having a blast!

Mike - "Taffy" is a very unusual name for a bull.  It's almost as unusual as naming a rattlesnake, "Fluffy". . .:-)

How about a dog names Kitty. Working with animals can be very hard but rewarding experience. Have fun.

Mike,

Golf, Fishing, Bank accounts, Sex don't believe what anyone tells you! Now we can ad a bulls weight, calling Taffy 1,400 lbs may help his ego, but he doesn't look much more than half that.

Mike - I had two 'front line' guys named Fric and Frac.  They were good for the spring calf market.  And on the second round there was Magnum.  All three were beautiful Hereford bulls.  Most times kind of indifferent to the world, other than their 'part' in it, but man ... they produced some beautiful healthy babies.  Now I'm wanting to go through the 30 boxes of photos in the closet to find some old pictures of them.

Darn you!  See what you've done now!  I'm all nostalgic and stuff ...   :)

Enjoy!  God directs us to people, places and events ... all in an effort to teach us that He made the earth.
