Be Prepared for the Next Storm

Well on Sunday night it happened for the first time since 1986. A tornado actually touched down in Edmond. The sirens sounded and many Edmond residents followed their emergency plan. Were you prepared? I was surprised to learn that I was not. Almost as soon as we realized that the storm was serious and were considering what to do, the power went out. That was when we discovered how unprepared we were. Sure, we have a weather radio and flashlights. But, we did not have batteries in the weather radio or the flashlight in our closet. The flashlight was in the trunk of my car at the ready for showing Edmond real estate in the dark!

Well, the storm passed by and we were all very safe. But as I tried to get back to sleep I could only think of putting together my own Disaster Supply Kit which should include;

  1. A 3 day supply of water. 1 gallon per person per day.
  2. A 3 day supply of non-perishable food and a hand held can opener
  3. change of clothes, rain gear, and sturdy shoes for each family member
  4. blankets or sleeping bags
  5. First aid kit and prescription medication
  6. extra pair of glasses
  7. A list of family doctors and important medical information
  8. Battery powered radio and EXTRA BATTERIES
  9. Identification, credit cards, copies of home insurance information
  10. extra sets of keys for house and car
  11. Tools like waterproof matches, garbage bags, compass, pen, paper, flares, screwdriver, hammer, and bleach.

Hopefully it will be another 22 years before a tornado threatens Edmond, OK, but we should all be prepared.
