In The Land Before Time ~ Meet My Ocean Front in Oklahoma
One of the most fascinating discoveries about Southeast Oklahoma is that waaaaay back there In The Land
Before Time we were ocean front... a shallow gulf sea covered the areas that I call home and where I work. '' Small crustaceans were plentiful in this shallow water. They are still plentiful here but in the form of Limestone.
Now if I advertised some ocean front property in Oklahoma for sale,
they'd probably either have me arrested or committed, one or the other.
Even if I told you that your Raymond Gary Lake Front property used to be ocean front, you'd still look at me like I was missing a wheel somewhere.
So get ready to look at me sideways... because we were ocean front. One of the best places to get a good look at some of the evidence is around Raymond Gary Lake. The large flat limestone outcropping around much of the lake are made up tiny crustacean creatures that died millions and probably billions of years ago. Its pretty amazing that their shells are still laying there for us to see.
I've been doing quite a bit of reading about the limestone formations in McCurtain County and Choctaw County Oklahoma with one source stating that in southern McCurtain County, the limestone formation is 190 feet thick.
What we see around the lake is mostly large limestone rocks mixed with black Swink-Hollywood Soil. (This type of soil is formed from Limestone rock. It seems odd that white rock produces black soil.)
I have seen what appears to be solid limestone bedrock in the bottom of the lake in some places also. The large limestone rocks that have not been disturbed have the small cretaceous creatures' shells very evident all on the top of the rocks.
Concrete is rather expensive to pour if you're doing a large quanity of it. These huge limestone rocks remind me of concrete. Many of them run in ledge formations as though someone somewhere decided to pour a patio just the right size for patio furniture or picnic tables.
Many years ago when I first saw these large flat rock ledges on a Raymond Gary Waterfront Lot that we had at that time, I remember telling Don that God had poured us a concrete deck overlooking the lake, just for us to enjoy. Many people look at those rocks and consider them a nuisance.. I love them. They make me feel rich... concrete poured by God just for me. Of course, you have to have a pretty good sized machine to move them around and arrange them.
The rock pit that was featured in this blog is just west of Idabel Oklahoma. It is a limestone rock pit. You do not see the fossils in these rocks. By the time they are quarried and crushed, they appear to just be white rocks...
There are also blue shale beds around Valliant Oklahoma. That's another rock formed from sea creatures.
Native rocks have been used forever here in construction. Including both limestone and river rock.
One of my clients that purchased waterfront property on Raymond Gary Lake, site unseen was very excited when they visited their lot a year later and he found a "fossil" on his lot! He took his fossil back to the east coast with him, where they live.
An ocean in Southern Oklahoma? Sure enough.. back In The Land Before Time and it's evidence is with us today and ever so fascinating.
Would you like to own some large Limestone Rocks and your own Hollywood-Swink Soil that has been formed from those rocks? Call me.. let's talk limestone!
