What A Screech
You could hear him from a good distance away. While nocturnal by nature he was about to take flight in broad daylight. He had stayed cooped up in this tiny little hidy hole long enough. It was time to go , to move on to bigger and better things.
You first met this little guy in a post Empty Nest Syndrome as this little owlet was just getting ready to leave the nest. This tree had been home for his siblings for several years as his parents had nested in this tree for some time.

This tall maple tree along with many others in the area were becoming a threat to human habitation in the area. The centre of the trees were decaying and a good wind would snap them like toothpicks so they had to come down. The decision was made and the trees started to fall.
We arrived at our summer hideaway shortly after this one came down. The sound of the chainsaw was rather loud so we went to investigate and found them cutting this tree up. I t was heartbreaking to think that a home was destroyed but we realized the necessity to remove the dangers to us and our neighbours was paramount.
We did manage to rescue a section of the tree as a reminder but did not know what we would do with it.
This past summer Barrie decided he had better do something with it as it was already starting to decay even more. The bark was falling off and the bugs were starting to eat into it.
He spent most of two days taking the rest of the bark off, sanding out some of the really bad spots on the outside and pealing out some of the rotten wood on the inside. Once he had it all cleaned up he put several coats of a water repellent on the outside to help preserve it ..... with out changing it's natural look any more than necessary. Then he stained the inside black.
Now you might ask why black? The answer is simple he was turning it into a light to light up the edge of our drivewayand the steps up to the lawn but wanted a subdued light. Before he stained it the light coming out of the side and the top was very harsh and bright
Here It Is Wth A Temporary Light In It .
He intends to finish it off possibly with a sensor light that will come on as you drive up the driveway at night. This would provide sufficient light when we arrive after dark to be able to see to get to our hideaway and turn on some outside lights. With the top open he will put a glass cover on it to allow the light to shine up into the tress providing a soft glow over the yard with out any harsh lighting.
......
......
MAKE IT A GREAT DAY
