Straddling The Oak Ridge Moraine - Uxbridge - The Trail Capital Of Canada

Uxbridge Straddles the Oak ridges Moraine and has distinction of holding the official designation as the Trail Capital of Canada

Town Trails

The Uxbridge trail system includes a network of urban trails that connect to the Oak Ridges Trail and the Trans Canada Trail. The town trails are designed to help residents appreciate the beauty and history of their town by linking various sections of the town together for both walkers and bikers. The Town Trails include the Ewen Trail, the Historic Trail, the Maple Bridge Trail, the Quaker trail, the Wooden Sticks Trail, and Country Side Preserve.

The Countryside Preserve

With 6 kms of marked trails this 140 acre preserve of rolling meadowlands, woodlands, wetlands and ponds is the jewel in the crown for the Trail Capital of Canada. Located adjacent to the urban area it is located on the southern boundaries of the Uxbridge and on the Oak Ridges Moraine.

The Oak Ridges Moraine

Uxbridge straddles the heights of Oak Ridges Moraine, a ridge of land that runs parallel to Lake Ontario, approximately 60 km north of the lake and extending from the Niagara escarpment in the west to the Trent River in the east. The rolling hills and river valley that make up the Moraine are the result of the advancing and retreating glaciers some 12,000 years ago. Forty five percent of The Township of Uxbridge is located with in the protected area of the Oak Ridges Moraine. This includes extensive rural and natural areas, as well as some hamlets and even a portion of the urban area of the "Town".

Map of The Moraine from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oak Ridges Moraine is a Provincially protected, environmentally sensitive, area that covers 190,000 hectares. It is important to note that the large deposits of sand and gravel left by the Ice Ages also play a significant part in providing drinking water to a large portion of Ontario's population. The sand and gravel (aquifers) filter rain and melting snow, this filtered water is then released through the rivers and streams flowing south into lake Ontario and North into Lake Simcoe, Lake Scugog, and Rice lake.

Wetlands and Streams

With the wide diversity of, kettle lakes, bogs, wetlands, woodlands and streams, it is no surprise that 65 river systems are found within its boundaries. Roughly 30% of the Moraine is still forested making it is one of the last remaining green belts in southern Ontario.
