Woodstock's Snow Countess Gets a Face Lift

Snow Countess Gets A Face Lift

From Bob McFarland, Director of Community Services, City of Woodstock

Those travelling in the vicinity of Dundas and Springbank Streets in Woodstock will see a tent erected over the statue of Springbank Snow Countess. Why? Because she is being "stripped" and restored and the lady must have her privacy.

There are several layers of older paint on the statue and there are places where it has blistered and/or lifted. The City and Holstein Canada have hired a well-known London-based art preservationist and restorer Keith Bantock to conduct the restoration work. Mr. Bantock also has done preservation and restoration work on pieces in the City's fine art collection at the Woodstock Art Gallery, including some of the Carlyle paintings.

They will be soda-blasting the monument and then repainting it to replicate the exact markings that Springbank Snow Countess had. The work is expected to take about 8 days and is weather dependent. They will not be able to paint on wet days - even with the tent in place.
