The Earth Day Network announced their top ten green U.S. cities yesterday and Corvallis, Oregon landed in the #1 spot! The Earth Day Network uses several variables in determining the list including:
per capita transportation emissions, energy sources, energy use reductions, and reductions in non-renewable products.
Corvallis was recognized for the purchase of 100 gigawatt hours of green power each year, which is more than any other city in the US. It was noted that we also have 2,000 acres of open green space and the 9th highest percentage of bike commuters in the nation.
Oregon cities frequently show up on green/sustainabiity lists. On this particular list, Portland/Vancouver/Beaverton ranked #2 for their green building initiatives and strict land use and urban population growth policies. Portland also ranks first on the Mother Nature Network, Treehugger, and on the Sustainable Lane website. Eugene was ranked #1
on the National Geographic Green Guide site.
Last week Corvallis was ranked as #1 in The Professional Geographer for green buildings per capita. We have at least three LEED certified buildings (Kelly Engineering at OSU, Elements Building downtown, and Corvallis High School) and policies in place to "build green" public buidlings in the future.
Corvallis, Oregon may get about 40 inches of rain every year, but that's not the only reason it's green here. Come for a visit and see why Corvallis in the Pacific Northwest's Most Beautiful College Town. Bring your bike!
