Identity Theft Part 3 -- What do you do if you have been a victim?

I’m a victim of Identity Theft but what do I do?

Quick FRAUD to Do List:

First you can request a freeze on your credit by contacting one of the credit bureaus (their contact information is listed below) and requesting that they put a “freeze” on your credit. Once you do this with one it will automatically take place with the other two.

You can file a complaint with the FTC and also file a police report with your local police department. This will help you while disputing any charges in question. If you haven’t already done so order your credit report from each bureau and find all the new accounts. Once you have established which accounts are not yours then you will want to call them and request any information they have about you signing up for the account and naturally you will want to cancel those accounts.

Rick- Great information. Most people don't do anything until tha damage is done.

Thanks for the tips. Its something we all need to watch for.

It still amazes me by how many people don't monitor their credit and don't stay up to date with what is happening to it. It can just cause so many problems that are so hard to fix. It just seems that for most people they don't think about it until it is too late and something has happened.

Great advice, but just a heads up that recently there have been reports that when reporting to one that you want to freeze your account may not always get the other two frozen. A glitch in the system sometimes leaves one or both the other accounts unfrozen.

So take the extra 10 minutes and call all three!

Great series, Rick.  Just enough information to keep someone going - look forward to the next installment!
