A lot of people talk about the R word when thinking of Eugene... rain. So what? With rain we get green. We get streets washed of dust. We get thousands of migratory birds in nearby wetlands. Wet lands that are set aside from development and are are adjacent to the west side of Eugene and Fern Ridge Reservoir. Our precipitation turns to snow in the mountains, where we have show parks, downhill skiing, snow shoeing.
Our neighborhood, on a grandiose scale, is not limited to the Willamette Valley. We extend to the wonderful coast of the Pacific ocean. Here you will find unbelievable sand dunes, rocky out crops, tidal pools, fishing spots, light houses, small towns with eateries, antique shops, the Hatfield Marine Center, and the list goes on.
Our Neighborhood extends to the Cascade Mountains an hour to the east, where you will find the Willamette National forest, Willamette Pass Ski area and Hoodoo ski area. There are trails, lakes and streams galore. Just a short drive from Eugene. And just over the crest is the eastside high desert country.
In Eugene there are numerous live theatre venues, including stages at the University of Oregon, Lane Community College, and the Hult Center for the Performing Arts, among others. And speaking of the University of Oregon, if we just could have stayed healthy this year the football team could have gone beyond ranked number two in the nation. And now, since our neighbor to the north, Oregon State University has won two baseball national championships in a row the U of Oregon is bringing back baseball... and with a brand new baseball park on the drawing board. And speaking of new buildings, the U of O campus has a lot of new construction just completed, in progress, and soon to be started (new basket ball court site has been purchased adjoining the campus.
Springfield, gateway to the beautiful McKenzie River, has had its complexion changed from a town relying heavily on the logging industry to one of a large Gateway Mall with two theatre complexes with a nearby business park. A short distance from the mall the brand new Riverbend Hospital will open in late 2008. Springfield, as well as Eugene, has numerous new housing areas to choose from.
